My first BGE failure

Last night I decided to cook something that I have cooked a few times before, Rack of Lamb (which turned out fine) and roasted potatoes. I also tried something new, grilled romaine lettuce. Let me start with the lettuce, ugh, this is not good! Haha, I drizzled olive oil, salt and pepper, grilled it til it showed a lil color, then sprinkled with parmegan and drizzled with balsamic glaze. I don't mean to put anyone down, and I know the egg is a blast to cook on, but come on fellow eggheads, lettuce is supposed to be cold! So I guess you can't really call that a fail, since that is how it is supposed to be, my fiance, nor I enjoyed it. Second part of fail; I expected the rack to take much less time to cook, so not really paying any attention to them, I overcooked my taters! I have to say this is my first fail on my BGE, which I have had for four months and cook on about 4 times a week, and really it wasn't that bad. The egg is great, it is so hard to screw something up, when you do it is pretty much a fluke! I am probably just over-reacting because I decided to quit my 5 year nicotine habit 3 days ago! Anyway, happy egging everyone! Thanks for listening to my rant!

Sorry to hear about your not so great meal. The saying around here is that if you don't have pictures it really didn't happen. I'm guessing you didn't take pictures, SO the consolation is that it didn't happen. Just make your next cook your best, and you'll forget all about it

Congratulations on giving up the nicotine. I've only cooked rack of lamb once and it turned out great, but I did monitor it carefully. Haven't tried the romaine lettuce thing yet although lots of folks on here rave about it. Frankly, it doesn't really sound that great to me for the same reason you point out......hot lettuce. To each his own.........

Deggman, Now all you have to do is have the hair on your arms singed off by the egg and you will be in elite group.
I quit smoking about 13 years ago and If I don't watch it I could be smoking again in no time. Quit smoking is harder than drinking I think. Wish you well. Tim -
Deggman,
Congrats on quitting the butts. I've tried the grilled romaine and don't care for it either. I did spatchcock chickens over a pan of root vegetables last night and didn't put enough oil in the pan. Couldn't get the egg hot enough to get the chicken to render before the burned smell happened. Had to take out the carrots and cut the burned stuff off. Everybody messes one up once in a while but you mess up less with egg cooks IMHO.

Congratulations on quitting smoking! :cheer: That is worth reporting. I quit over 35 yrs ago, one of the best things I have ever done for myself.
Like you, I tought that grilled romaine would be wonderful. The pics made it look great, but I did not care for it much either.
Rack of Lamb is another matter, one of my favorites :P :cheer: -
Hey I smoked three packs a day for better than 20 years and was able to quit. I think it is one of the greatest gifts you can give to yourself, and to the people around you. If you need any help with it or just some cheer leading, shoot me an email. The only smoking you need to do is in the Egg. -RP

never quit cigs, but quitting lettuce was easy :laugh:about 15 years ago mentioned to my doctor that i felt sick every time after eating a healthy salad with lettuce, he said then dont eat it, and i havent :laugh:fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

Had grilled romaine once at a restaurant. It was pretty good. For me, theoretically, it seemed like it would be just like wilting spinach. My BGE attempt was pretty poor. Half burned, half cool. Have to admit, I haven't been inclined to attempt it again.
I was lucky. One day, I just stopped my 2 pack a day habit of 5 years. Bummed a cigarette about 2 weeks later, and it tasted awful. Never smoked again. For me, it was just a matter of keeping busy. Did gain ten pounds tho'. -
".......BGE, which I have had for four months and cook on about 4 times a week......"
That is a failure rate of just slightly under 1.6% and it wasn't a failure even at that as you underestimated the cook time on the lamb :( and you like lettuce cold. -
No !!! Don't give up ... grilled romaine is wonderful for salad when you get it right ... hot ... crank the egg up and do about one minute on each side ... will just start to char ... and gives a salad amazing flavor.

I know the feeling...but as long as you are learning from your mistakes it's really not a total failure - you'll just do a better job next time!

I like that theory!

Haha! I did have a massive flare up doing pizza one afternoon, smells great!!

Thank you all for the support! Quitting has actually been easier than I thought! Anyway tonight I will be doing prok chops, which I have not done on the egg yet, mmmmm.

first, congrats on quitting smoking. that's huge.
regarding the grilled lettuce. i think the concept that lettuce is supposed to be cold when you are cooking it.....
;o)
grilled romaine is not for everyone. some like it, some don't. i personally like the contrast of hot and cold i get with the grilled romaine. to achieve this, i don't pull mine out of the refrigerator until i'm ready to cook it.
to not have it cold, simply let it get to room temp before you throw it on.
if you don't like it, don't cook it. you are only limited by your imagination as to what you can and can't do on the egg.
g'luck. -
I have not tried the grilled romaine, but "hot lettuce" is not all bad!
One of our favorites is what we call wilted lettuce -- fresh leaf lettuce with some sliced, green onions. The dressing is made by cooking some bacon bits, and then making a sweet and sour dressing with vinegar and sugar and the bacon grease. YUM -
:woohoo:
