this comes up all the time,, couple of weeks of reading here http://www.eggheadforum.com/index.php?searchword=large+vs+small&dtstart=0&dtrange=0&orderby=score&pagelength=50&returnfirst=0&option=com_simpleboard&Itemid=55&func=search
My opinion,,, buy 1 of each -
except he wanted to know xl vs. Large.
i agree though, if you have the cash for an XL, get a small and a large for about the sameed egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante -
another thing. does an XL use alot more lump or just a little more? im a college kid just want something big but efficient on charcoal?

Scroll down on the first page of threads and there is a long thread on it. If you do a search there are hundreds of others discussing it.

It holds alot more,, don't know that it uses much more but without accessories (lump reducer ring) you will burn more fuel heating up for just 1 steak but probably not much more for a low and slow

This has been discussed a thousand times, here is a search for you.

No real need for a big XL if still in college. Large would be good for you and when your buddies come over. Large might be overkill if it's just you eating majority of the time. Go for the XL if you are doing grilling for bigger groups. Large is good for 5-6 person cook. Just my 2 cents."The pig is an amazing animal. You feed a pig an apple and it makes bacon. Let's see Michael Phelps do that" - Jim Gaffigan

There are more accessories available for the large than the XL.-----------------------------------------------------Albuquerque, NMLarge BGE, Weber Kettle, Weber Smokey Joe

Go with the large and small. More versatility in two. Direct and indirect, or hot and low. Large has a lot of extras, but for a few steaks or chops use the small. I live alone and purchased the medium. In less than a week I ordered the mini. No sense burning all that coal just for a steak or burgers. Many members of this forum have more than one egg, different sizes.

I would suggest you start with the large.....just a matter of time before you are contemplating a second, third....I have a large and a small. I hope you enjoy yours are much as I do mine.

I agree. I bought a large in June, and decided that I needed another. So I just bought a med.
What this allows you to do is cook something hot, and low and slow at the same time. You can't do that if you only get one egg.
So, at next years fig fest (fig cooking with another couple), I will be able to make a fig pizza, and ribs with fig sauce at the same time. -
