adding charcoal
after reading the posts, it looks like a 13lb turkey could take as long as 6 hours. will filling the ceramic basket 1 inch higher than the air holes with lump burn that long at 300degrees?[p]can i just add lump without getting it up to temp somewhere else first, i heard you can but you can't with regular charcoal. i am confused.[p]how about a nice dry rub under the skin and a giant can of Foster's up the 'you know what', has anyone tried that yet? the chiken turns out pretty stellar. Do you think same thing just on a larger scale?[p]thank you to everyone for posting such great messages. they are a joy to browse.

kregger,
With lump, you can add more charcoal during a cook if you have to, but it's not something you'd normally plan to do. It's almost always best to load up the firebox to the top or beyond, into the fire ring. You don't say what size Egg you're using, but a medium or large should be able to hold 325-350° long enough to cook a 13 lb turkey, no problem. 300° may be a bit low, and would guarantee a longer cooking time, which you don't necessarily want with a turkey.[p]Read through some of the posts from the last two or three days for many ideas about turkey prep and cooking.[p]Bob

What I did with my 13# was
1.Remove the fire ring
2.fill the firebox up right to the top.
3. Started the lump with BGE ligher cubes
4.Placed a grill on the firebox
5. placed fire ring on top of lower grill.
6. added 4 fire bricks flat on the grill, flat stones will work too.
7. filled a pie pan or drip pan with water, put it on the fire bricks
8. placed second grill on top of fire ring.
9. Let fire get stable @ 325 for 30 minutes.
10. Put fully prepped turkey on rack in roasting pan on the top grill.
11. close lid and cook turkey. [p]What I had to do was add water to the drip pan quite often, every time I basted the turkey, I added water to the lower pan. It was trick because the roasting pan was much larger. I used the ash tool very carefully to slide to the side a bit, the poured water carefully into the drip pan.
I had a lot of steam inside the egg, but man, what a turkey.[p]After 5.5 hours @ 325-350 plus 1 hour to start lump, There is still a lot left. You should easily get 8 hours @ 325.

kregger,
Fill the Firebox up to the top where the fire ring sits on it. No need to add then. Happy T-Day![p]Mike
