Happy First Fall Woosday . . . almost.
Gator Bait
Posts: 5,244
I just realized that the first day of Fall is tomorrow. My bad.

A few from the archives to welcome in the Fall, a good sign that the storm season will be winding down and cooler temperatures should not be to far away.
White Ibis in the mangroves.

Tickseed . . .

. . . and Fleabane. The fly may be a Yellowjacket Hover Fly that feeds on nectar.

Have a great Woosday,
Blair

Love the Ibis....
LET'S GO CANES!!!!!!!!!

Very nice as usual Gator. We are starting to color up already. Heading for the beach tomorrow though

Thanks Kim, they are beautiful and funny looking at the same time. The early settlers down here found them to be good eating, I think they are protected now. After a heavy summer rain they will invade the lawns in large flocks and wander around together probing the earth for what ever it is they like to eat. I have seen them pull some mysterious looking critters out of my lawn but have never been able to see what they were before they were swallowed. Half the time I am sure I don't want to know what it was.

Since Gator Bait started with photos from Florida, I decided to look for photos we took in Florida when we lived there. I couldn't find the photos of us riding an airboat across the Everglades but I did run up on this one from a charter boat adventure just off Miami Beach.
My Sweetie caught it with no one's help.
The other shark was caught by our friends from Jackson, Mississippi.

Thanks Cpt'n, seams like it's a bit early for you guys to have color already. Is that due to a dry summer? I miss the changing colors down here. It's 11:20AM here and 87º and climbing. I have seen one year where it was still 90º or hotter on Thanksgiving. If you can push a little cooler air this way it would be appreciated.
Have a great time at the beach.

Naaaaaaa.... Just an unreasonable facsimile.

WOW, Great photo Spring! Until you see a picture of one it is easy to forget that there are sharks that size in the waters around here. There are some real monsters. The largest I have heard of locally is a 15' Hammerhead. That looks like it was a great fishing trip.

my son and grandson picking apples

he is not sure about the apples.. but he loves oranges:)

I always loved apple season in New England. I bet after he is old enough to have wrapped himself around a few of Grandma Julie's Apple Pies he'll change his mind.

Looks like a great time Mickey, there will probably be enough brew at EGGtoberfest to qualify.
You know the old saying "Where ever you find four Episcopalians you'll find a fifth." Well Eggheads aren't much different.
No offense to any Episcopalians, I grew up as one and heard that old line that way, besides it's true.

We seem to be a couple of weeks ahead because of the heat this summer. Color is just starting, here is one from last year.

Blair,
Awesome as usual!! Here are a few from Canada.

Here is the prettiest flower of all.

Welcome home Molly and thanks. I love your flowers, they are beautiful. I agree on the last one and about the only way to improve it would be if you were in the picture also. :cheer:

We had never even given a thought to the sharks being in the water just a few hundred yards from world famous Miami Beach. The captain of the boat was as excited as we were because of the size and that it was a Golden Knight shark, a raraity so far north.
It was so big he couldn't get it in the boat so he strung it along side, ran the shark flag up and headed for Government Cut to get back into the Intercoastal Waterway and the marina.
Once the people on shore saw the shark flag on the boat they all ganged up on the shoreline to watch us bring it in. Must have been a couple hundred people. Some of them even came to the weighing.
It was quite an adventure.

The big sharks on this coast like to follow the Tarpon as I understand it. The 15' Hammerhead was biting 6' Tarpon in half in a single bite during the big Tarpon Tournament up at Boca Grand a number of years ago. I have heard of other Hammerheads that big being caught and beached up there. I guess if the truth be known they are not that rare. I think the only problem sharks we have for the most part are the amazing Bull Sharks. They are very common, smaller with a heavy build and don't mind fresh water. Aggressive biting machines that are probably responsible for the vast majority of shark bites in the state. I have seen news footage of huge schools of them migrating along the other coast and have seen pictures of kayaking friends catching them in the river. I don't think I would want to boat one in a kayak! -
Nice photo's Faith, I forget that Canada can be green. I think every time I have ever been there it has been white, cold as all heck and the ski's were on top of the car. And you say people actually live that far north!?!?!
Glad you had a good trip,
Blair

Hope you got to eat at least some of that bad boy. Love the shark, and that is definately a doozie. Congrats on the catch to the poker prize.
-
Sorry to disappoint you but at the time we lived in a 500 sq ft apartment and had no money to pay to process and store him. Gave him to the captain.
Thanks on the Poker Winnings.

Happy Fall! Sorry about the late Woosday post but DSL was down for the last 24 hours.
Love your 3rd down Ibis in motion shot. It's inspired me to post this of a hummingbird moth. Been trying to get a decent shot of that elegant bug all summer and this is the best I could do.... definitely looking at a new snappy shot camera and the Canon G12 is really looking good.
To follow your theme of archived Autumn photos....

And a cloud shot from the other day.
Cheers!

Wicked shot of the clouds. Very cool..

Fall eh?
WRAL-TV Studios
Temperature 92°F
Dew Point 72°F
Relative Humidity 53%
Heat Index 99°F
Going up to 96 tomorrow, which will mean triple digit heat index. Nice!!! I think a round of golf is in order for this weekend to celebrate. -
Thanks!
Yeah, I called this The Summer That Wasn't because of the weighty heat and very little leisure time spent outside compared to other summers.
Growing up in NC, those WRAL weather numbers are all too familiar.... sorry about that... only 83 here with 49% humidity.
Maybe it would be more appropriate to post a hot and hazy Fall photo from a few years ago.
Cheers!
john
