jake42,[p]I've been wondering this for a while. What is (are) the advantages to using a cast iron grate?
-
Mark Backer,
More mass = better (more) heat transfered from the grate
-
jimbob,
I contacted my local retailer. They were kind enough to include one on there next Green Egg order from the distributor. This way they did I did not have to pay shipping. They got it (in about 4 days), they called me, i picked it up.
i did talk to the company in Atlanta beforehand and they would be glad to ship you one. However you would have to pay the postage. They were kind enough to make me aware of the option that I chose. Either way it is well worth it.

Mark Backer,
I guarantee you that nothing, absolutely nothing sears your food better. And if you are in to the searing of your steak and locking in those juices i don't think you can find a better way at those high temps. Not to mention chix breast, burgers and anything else that you would require a good sear.
Hope this helps.
-
fishlessman,
Funny thing . When I first got it I was curious as to which side I should cook on as well. Actually after doing some research it was designed to cook on both sides. I just decided how I wanted my sear marks.
-
jake42,
How heavy, how hard is it to remove and what do you remove it with? Do you use to sear only and use the regular grate to cook with? Any info would be appreciated.[p]Joe

jake42,I wonder if the grid lifter that BGE makes would work on the cast iron grid?
-
jawjajoe,
It's about 10-12lbs. I have a grate gripper that works quite well moving it around. My primary use is for high temp "grilling" but it works for anything. I just figured i would use my porcelin grate for the other stuff.
-
jake42,[p]This is exactly what I've been looking for.....I have it on my outdoor pit grill and it works great. However, I was having trouble locating a circular one... What retailer did you find it at?? BGE??
-
Sandlapper,
I got mine from a place called outdoor living. If you have a Big Green Egg retailer in your area you shuold contact them and see if they will put on on their next order. My retailer was kind enough to do that for me without my paying the shipping and handeling. You can also contact the Big Green Egg in Atlanta and they will ship one to you.

MR H,
I know you will enjoy it.
-
jake42,
Thanks for the info. I assume that you aren't using the BGE gripper.[p]Joe
-
Jawjajoe,
As a matter if fact, that is exactly what I use.
