Heading to my 1st ever EggFest!

Hello,

I am attending Upland, CA event on the 25th as an official Taster and buying my first ever Large Egg at this event! I have plans printed to build a table so that aspect is taken care of. Money is tight (as with everyone) and while I watch the videos there seems to be so many Eggcessaries.

I'll be cooking first off chicken, ribs, burgers, steaks and a bit of fish if I dare to attempt so with that in mind, what are the top 2 accessories that you most use with your egg & think I need to get right away?

Thank you for your ideas! I've been reading these forums the last couple years and can't wait to actually contribute but guessing I will just be a student here for quite some time! I have a lot to learn!

Have a lovely evening!

Karen

    1. Thermapen instant read.
    2. Some type of a raised grid system.

    Have fun at your Eggfest.
    Thank you,

  • Instant read thermometer (Thermapen) and some way of cooking indirect (either platesetter or better yet, a spider from the Ceramic Grill Store and a pizza stone).

A very warm welcome to you to the cult...

Hey Karen, welcome!! I'll be cooking at that fest, so stop by and say hi. You can find me by the smell of Spam smoking!

And what everyone else said about accessories. Thermapen & platesetter.
  • Eggggg...xactly what I was thinking. I went for quite awhile w/o indirect - don't know how I survived/what I was thinking.

And as soon as you learn to cook to temps rather than time, the more a good thermometer means, and IMHO, Thermapen is the best. A remote probe is important too.

#2 Thermapen, remote thermometer, grid gripper, bigger spice rack, and the rest will just happen

    Hey, Karen - Welcome!!

    1) couple of firebricks to raise the grid to gasket level.

    2) Spider (Ceramicgrillstore.com)

    3) BGE Baking stone (dealer)

Gives you raised direct as well as a way to cook indirect. I know you said TWO, but the items I listed are inexpensive. I'm estimating, but bricks $5, spider $25, stone $30.

Thermapen is expensive ($90+) and overrated. I always overcook anyway, even though I have one!!

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Well, plate setter, pizza stone, MAPP gas torch to lite Lump, 10 bags of Royal Oak Lump from WalMart before they hide it for christmas decorations. Everyting else can wait. I was there last year for a short time, got to love the planes overhead.

  • Thank you everyone! Here is my list based on your much appreciated feedback:

    1. Thermapen instant read – with remote probe
    2. Raised grid system/plate setter/spider from ceramic Grill Store.

Grab as I can, as these items are fairly inexpensive:

    1. Couple of firebricks to raise the grid to gasket level. (please note I have NO idea what this means but for 5 – 10 bucks works with my budget!)
    2. BGE Baking Stone – pizza stone
    3. Ash Tool
    4. MAPP gas torch to light lump
    5. 10 bags of Royal Oak Lump.

Most importantly, look for Teresa, cooking her Spam and Dale to show me the true beauty of Egg Cooking at my first ever Eggfest! Thanks folks and have a lovely evening!
