Cast iron grate crack

I used my cast iron grate for the first time tonight to try to sear steaks, and noticed three of the ribs are now cracked  Not being a metal smith, I am VERY surprised at the cracking. I saw some older posts on this but nothing recently. Is this a warranty issue? I never achieved 600 degress on my grill, so I dont think it was excessive heat. Any ideas?

  • It can happen. My first grate cracked. It is definitely a warranty issue, bring it back to the dealer or call bge.

Stress cracks,do not be alarmed,it may not crack anymore.Mine has about 1/8th of the outter ring and part of the grids missing.Makes it easier to grab with welding gloves to remove! :)

I've only cracked two of 'em. hahaha Haven't had the nerve to use the third - still in the plastic bag. First one cracked after 2-3 cooks - lost a good sized chunk. Second one didn't last much longer, but it only cracked - nothing broke off. Warranty covered 'em, but I think that's only for the first year. Could be wrong about the year though.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

If you're lucky yours will break like mine did! Now it is twice as useful!

  • I believe they have a year warranty. Call and find out. I had to have mine replaced a while back. Tim
  • Just cook on it. Mine cracked on the second use and has been cracked ever since. I've used it probably 1.5 years. No worries.

My first one cracked on the first cook. I returned the grate and my second one cracked on the first cook. I did not return that grate. It has not cracked or got any worse sense. I have had that grate for over a year now.
