Wondering if it is worth it to upgrade to a Tel Tru thermo, or does the BGE have a pretty good track record?

Here we go again. :S
My view: Get the Tel-Tru. -
According to my Guru and Thermopen the BGE thermo is 30-50 degrees out of wack. Go with the "other" guy.

Groundhog: We are using both (we have 4 eggs) and I have not seen any significant perfomance difference. Just make sure you calibrate the thermometer (regardless which brand) every few months. (Just get a small pot of water to a boil, place the stem of the thermometer into the water, and allow enough time for the thermo to respond. The thermo should read 212*, or whatever boiling point is for your altitude. If the thermo isn't reading correctly, turn the nut on the back slightly until it reads correctly).

Sorry to frustrate you, but I guess if there were no repeat questions/topics the forum would run dry sooner than later....correct? Nothing personal, but it is a real turn off to have the veterans respond to newbies questions in the manner you did. Even if someone uses the search function to look up a topic, who is to say something hasn't changed since it was discussed last....And that discussion my be derived from some other topic all together. Again, my apologies for adding any frustration to your day, it was not my intention.

I calibrated it when I purchased the EGG, it was only like a few degrees off. I guess I can check it again this weekend since I have cooked a half dozen times and see if it has gone out, thank you for your feedback.

You need to calibrate your thermometer. It's a very simple task.

No big deal, it's just that we've had some rather contentious discussions about thermos.

Every BGE thermometer I've ever owned broke in less than a year. I have replaced them all with Tel Tru models. If I were you, I'd use the BGE until it breaks and then switch. The Naked Whiz

I like and trust my BGE thermometers, however, I do check them win boiling water and adjust if necessary. I have multiple eggs so if I get wondering I will pop in a different BGE thermometer.
If any of these go out or constantly have problems I will get the Tru Tel.

I have two large eggs and in less than a year one of my BGE therm's froze in place and I could no longer use it. I ordered two tel-tru's and have not looked back. Tim

Here is what I got but you may want to look around for yourself.

We don't see faces when posting on here and it can be frustrating at times when some one's words are sound disgusted but take it with a grain of salt and move on. I have been using this forum for about two years and I have learned a lot and have a lot to learn including the personalities in here.

Sounds like a plan, thank you.

Thank you Tim, I appreciate (and respect) your sentiments.

Thanks LC, Easy to calibrate and should be done every three months.
I calibrate my cheap instant read pens every two months and stick a date label on them to satisfy the DOA people. -
You have Dead On Arrival people??
