How to use wood

I usually whole chunks of oak or other woods in for flavor. Do many of you wrap them in foil with holes prior to this? I've never done that, but told I'm foolish for not.

  • bk,
I've not heard of many people wrapping CHUNKS in foil. Usually you hear about wrapping CHIPS in foil and poking a few holes in the foil.

  • The Naked Whiz,
I was told that it will smoke slow and leave you with a piece of lump.

  • bk,
Hard to say. I've never used foil on chunks. You will be left with lump, but I can't imagine that's much of an incentive to go get the foil out. It will turn to lump and then burn in the cooker if you don't use foil, also. Beats me. I'll have to try it. I do have to admit that when you toss a couple of chunks on the fire, they smoke like crazy for a while, so maybe the foil will tame that and won't have to wait for the smoke to die down to that desireable thin stream of blue smoke.
