First Egg, Iraq, Homecoming & Turkey!
Yes indeedee - I have now put all my eggs in one basket - or rather have ordered the egg (large) with many accessories to be delivered to my home in Houston. This will no doubt come as a surprise to the wife as I am currently on assignment in Iraq! [p]I figure the conversation will go something like this ..[p]"Honey - what on earth is that huge and heavy box that was delivered? I had to get our friends and neighbors to move it into the garage"[p]"Yes" I will say, my chest filling with pride, "that is our new Egg that I will need to cook the Turkey on Thanksgiving!" ... You see my dear wife and family do not yet know that I shall be returning to the happy homestead - assignment completed and no desire whatsoever to to return to this nasty place. And what better way to do so than with a surprize and an Egg![p]So I need you help ... puhleez! I need a delicious, foolproof turkey recipe to celebrate Thanksgiving with my wife, Noah (2 1/2 year old son) and parents.[p]Thanks to all - I am already an addict![p]Matthew.

Matthew,[p]First of all, thank you for your efforts overseas and congrats on ending your tour. (Keep your head down).[p]Second, congrats on the Egg and welcome to the club. I assure you that you will get many great suggestions for Turkey recipes, and since I've only been egging five months and have only done one bird (straight up smoked with pecan, indirect vertical with no brining. Just seasoned), I will defer to the vast knowledge of the others here. [p]Again, thanks, good luck and congrats!![p]

Matthew,
Ditto on what Mark Backer said - "Thank You" for all your efforts doesn't seem like enough, but just know we think about you guys/gals daily and thank God you are there for us! Travel safe. What a great surprise for your family![p]As far as Turkey goes, I'm sure you will get several recipe ideas - but I don't think you can ruin anything once it's hit the Egg! We've only done one bird and it was wonderful. We seasoned it with Olive Oil, Garlic, onion, salt and pepper. Then put it on one of those racks (up the hinny) indirect with Pecan chips at about 350. Yummy! Our 2 1/2 year old daughter loved it as much as the rest of us!

Matthew,
Did you find out about the egg while you were over there? If so, that is pretty cool! Stay safe and come home soon. Good luck.

Matthew,[p]You gave me goosebumps...(at least that is my excuse until I see the doctor). Send me an e and I'll send you back my FAVORITE brine. Even non-turkey people have swooned over turkey soaked in this stuff![p]Welcome home...and thanks.[p]Molly

Matthew,
You could probably do anything to that bird and your family would not even notice since you will be there! Congratulations on your coming home. I'm still waiting for my nephew (a sort of son to be since he lived me from the age of 12) to come home from Ft. Anaconda in Iraq but that isn't supposed to be until March.
An easy way to make your turkey is: heat your BGE to 325 degrees, wash your bird, place it on a vertical turkey roaster, spray your bird with PAM or the like, and put it on the BGE for about 10 minutes per pound. I also use a Polder thermometer - temperature should be around 180 degrees.
Again WELCOME HOME!!!!!!!!!! Glad you made it home in one piece.

I spent 22 years in the Air Force during a relatively peaceful time and never had to experience the hardships that you and the other military personnel are experiencing now. Thank You! [p]I've spent many Thanksgivings and Christmas's in chow hall lines. Believe me, this year's egged turkey will be the best you have ever had. [p]Have a safe trip home and happy egging!!
-
Matthew,
Thank you for your post we can't wait for you to get home. I served in the Marines and was in the first Gulf War and now am happy to serve you as all of here on this forum are. When you get home please post pictures for all of us. Welcome to our family be safe.

Matthew,
god bless you. .. .stay safe and come home safe. . .[p]and a big THANKS to you and everyone serving so unselfishly and admirably in iraq, afghanistan, and everywhere else around the world, be it in harm's way, or right here in america!![p]

Thank you so much for all your kind words and thoughts! Please allow me to clarify that whilst I have spent much time in Iraq and Kuwait that I am not in the armed forces, but rather work for them as a member of a large corporation of whom **** Chaney was once affiliated! Unfortunately, the lines between uniformed and civilian personnel have now been obliterated and for all intents and purposes we are all in the same boat. I have nothing but unending admiration and respect for those who serve, and my job is a walk in the park compared to theirs.[p]God bless you all,[p]Matthew.

Matthew,
Welcome home and thanks for what you and all the others are doing on behalf of a greatful America.[p]What a nice surprise for your family. You will get lots of good recipes for turkey and a host of other meaty items. All you have to do is ask this Forum and you will be an Eggspert in no time.[p]Since you are from Houston, you should know that there are a lot of Eggheads in Texas and we get together every May in Austin to have our own Eggfest. Last year's was fantastic. Go to http://www.texas-eggfest.com/index.html to read about the 2005 Eggfest. Between now and then should give you plenty of time to practice your favorite recipe to cook at the fest. [p]Welcome home.[p]Spring Chicken

Matthew - a clarification!,
thanks for the clarrification. . .you are still in the line of fire though, and while pundints and politicians can debate the how and why certain companies got contracts, the fact remains that the worker bees are over there trying to help in a place where the silent majority DO want our help. . .and where we do have dedicated americans working to rebuild their infrastructure despite the minority's best efforts to tear it down. ..no shame in that whatsoever!! . .

Matthew,[p]Here's how I do mine. Be sure to click the pic so you can see it in all it's glory...[p]Welcome home,

Matthew - a clarification!,[p]Makes not a whit to me and have no problem with you working for 'H'. They are just the scapegoat du jour anyway. AlexShark and I have decided all the "stolen oil" is being hidden in a Hyundai inconspicuously parked somewhere in West VIrginia. You should be able to spot it by the long hose running from it directly to Bagdhad and the big "H" painted on the side. Other than that, almost stealth. [p]Welcome back[p]mShark
-
Matthew,[p]I'm in San Antonio, and your homecoming is the best news I've heard all day! My son finished his stint in the Marines just before it all broke loose over there. Glad he didn't have to go. We're real proud of you guys.[p]Welcome home![p]Lawn Ranger (Mike)
