Temp change and wind??

edited -0001 30 in EggHead Forum
I posted this yesterday in response to Topo Gigo's Post on his "22.5 hour challenging butt cook". But it is so far down I am not sure it will be seen. So I'm posting again.[p]To Topo Gigo's wind issue. I am about to build a table for my Large & Medium BGEs. The table is basically the same as what is sold in the BGE store (but with double drop ins for the Eggs) plus a few modifications, a couple of drawers mabe a fold out wing shelf etc. but this wind thing and its effect on dome temperature varioations has me curious. What if out in front of the bottom vent I built a wind screen. Maybe just a peice of wood that sits 3-5 inched up from the bottom shelf infront of the vent just to block the wind. Has anyone tried this?? Any opinions on whether it would work or not? Would it do more harm than good?
Thx,
T-Que

    T-Que,
I don't know this for sure, but I'll throw it out there for others to comment on.
I believe that the wind blowing across the top vent could act similar to that of a chimney. Wind blowing causes a lower pressure outside the egg and increases the draft which will suck more air out of the egg, thus causing more fresh air being pulled into the bottom vent. I think that is more probable than the wind blowing directly into the bottom vent.
My thoughts are that a wind shield will not help, but like I said, It's an educated guess based on several years working on heating equipment and dealing with flue draft control. I don't see why the egg would be any different.[p]

    T-Que,
Been Egging for just over 5 years now and I've had the wind come from every direction. HAs it made a big difference in any of my cooks? Nope. Sometimes we tend to scrape up issues just to have something to worry about. Like to see photos of the table when you're through though.

  • Sundown,
Thanks for the wind insight. As for the table, no problem. I will post it upon completion. But unfortunately it will be a little while. A lot of yard excavation and a deck extension to put it on must come first.
    Thanks again

Makes sense. Plus it saves me some design work! therefore i'll take it as gospel.[p]thx

    T-Que,
Let me preface my remarks by saying my Egg is in a nest and not a table. Having said that, yes, I would seriously consider some sort of wind deflectors for the bottom vent. The internal temperature is effected more by the bottom vent than the top. (Hey - that's why you have a daisy wheel, right? To "tweek" the temps.) If the wind is blowing straight into the bottom vent it's going to raise the temperature inside the Egg. I suppose if you put the table on wheels then you wouldn't need some sort of baffle. You'd just turn the table a bit. But if it's on flat feet than I think you'd want to consider some sort of baffle. If not built into the table then something else would be worth considering.[p]My 2¢ worth...[p]Kelly

    T-Que,
Like Kelly, I also have an egg nest. I bought it to have the flexibility to relocate as well as adjust for "ambient conditions." I have not regretted my buying decision on either count. The ability to adjust BGE orientation for wind conditions has rendered the wind factor only a passing consideration. As long as your table has wheels, or is otherwise moveable, I don't think you'll have a need for a deflector. Also, please consider what may happen if you have such a device in place when the fire breathing dragon decides he needs to belch!
