New Egger Question

edited -0001 30 in EggHead Forum
Well, after lurking on this site for about 2 months. You people have convinced me to take the plunge and purchase a large BGE. From your posts, it seems that the BGE works great for cooking steaks (via TREX) at high temperatures and at low temps for butt, brisket, and ribs. How well does the BGE work for at medium temperatures. For example, on my Webber charcoal kettle using the direct method, I love grilling cut-up chicken pieces. The chicken is moist and the skin is nice and crispy. Will this be the same on the BGE? I see a lot of recipies for spactchock chicken and beer can, but not this common method for grilling chicken.[p]Also, I live near Cincinnati. Can anyone reccomend a store for me to buy the BGE at?[p]thanks in advance

Hoss,[p]Chickens, pork loins, pork tenderloins, chuck roasts, etc. all come out great.[p]The only thing that has disappointed me regarding my Big Green Egg is me.[p]
• Hoss,
prime rib, started at 500 degrees, then lower the dome temp to 325 and let roast. ...you will find that anything you ever did, at any temperature you ever did it at, in the oven, you can do on the egg, and it will taste better. . .roasts, fish, casseroles, lasagna, chili, baked beans, pizza, stews, bread, etc. etc. . . .the sky is the limit. ..[p]good luck and welcome to the cult. . .er, club. . .no, cult. .
Hoss,
The egg is a chicken machine. I like grilling/smoking the thighs direct on a raised grate at about 275. Takes around 90 minutes to 2 hours. Kicking it up at the end to crisp the skin, and you have the perfect chicken piece.[p]Welcome to the forum!

Hoss,[p]The link is to Cincinnati area dealers. You can put you zip code in a spot on the "Contact Us" link off the main page if this doesn't help. You'll love a BGE, yopu made a great decision.[p]Chuck

Hoss,
Welcome aboard. Check your email. I live near Cincinati also and would be happy to help with anything. You will cook everything on the egg, I predict.

Hoss,
Look at Nature Boy's and Mad Max's pictures--if only you could smell that food. Nothing wrong with that webber except it is a lot more work than cookin on an egg and the egg does it better. You'll never regret it.

Hoss,[p]You won't find anything better than a spatchcock chicken in my book! I rub it down with just a lil' bit of olive oil then give it some Tsunami Spin, @ 350 it's ready in one hour!

Wahooegger,
Thank you! Those were rubbed with straight Tsunami Spin, then hit with a sweet sauce toward the end. The key is to give them some time.[p]I like your handle...a lot. Where are you from? [p]Happy eggin

Hoss,
Oh, sure, you lurk on the board and listen in on the idle chat about wings, and ribs, and butts ... and you think to yourself, "gee, I have to get one of these egg things." You go blindly to the dealer and plunk down the bucks for that innocent looking domed ceramic, get it home and prepare for the first cook. Ah, the purity of lump charcoal. The pale wifts of smoke from a clean starter. The great taste of whatever you put on the grid. But then it happens ...[p]One day you head out to the egg to start some ribs for Saturday night and you think, "mmmmmm ... some baked beans and roast corn would be good with these." But you realize there is no room on the grid for more food. The realization comes that a second egg would sure be useful. Pretty soon you find yourself down at the local dealership looking at a small egg. After all, how much harm could a cute litte version of the egg cause? The next realization is that you are fully hooked and have been assimilated into the cult.[p]Welcome.

• FatDog,
LOL. .. that's EGGSACTLY the way it happened to me. . ..can't tell you how often i have both my large and small fired up in order to cook a complete meal. . .

• Thanks for all of your help!! I will take one step at a time ... First the large BGE. Then I will play it by ear.[p] Also, is the nest and wings a nice option to have with the large BGE?

Hoss,
I think a table is a better choice. For some ideas go to Naked Whiz's site and look at some of the tables folks have made. My soon to be son-in-law built mine for me last Christmas. He did a great job and the table makes cooking and storing easier. The attached picture (I hope) shows my setup in the middle of the first two-egg cook.
