I hadn't seen this posted before....

  • great story...gotta love the part: "Terry and Linda sold the karaoke machine, the pool table, and the camper. They've kept the Big Green Egg"

Rather fascinating! I've forwarded it to the daughter of my wife's best friend who made it to one of Bob Barker's last shows. She won about $20k of prizes which they sold except for a small motorcycle they kept for their sons.

Yeah, thanks for posting. I like that they sold everything except the BGE!

what some people fail to understand, is the contestants need to pay income tax for the winnings, and that could be close to 30%, so selling most of there prizes is not uncommon, unless of course you got the cash to do it. still you come out ahead in some ways.

Yeah, I heard an interview with a guy that won $275,000 on who wants to be a millionaire. He said that they did not take taxes out at time of receipt, that you had to hold out the %40-45 to pay the following April. He did not, and didn't have a happy April 15th.

He wins $275K and gets $275K and the tax liability never dawned on him? What a brain trust!

Thanks for posting what a great article. I used to love that show but it lost a lot when Barker retired. I have never seen the BGE on it before... now I will watch for it.
  • One thing I've wondered is, since the shows are filmed in California, do you have to pay CA state income tax too? Anyone know?

That's a great article. Interesting. Long though. LOL.

As for winning 250K and not holding back for taxes. That guy's an idiot. Sorry...just not too bright.
