    DTC,

Look over the Posts "in Remembrance" for several stories and expressions of 'family love" for CWM.

Thanks. I know ALL of us wish we could be present Monday. I will be there in thought and prayer Monday during the service.

    Morning dirty truck chuck:

Like Misippi Egger said...check out the "Rememberance" post...if you tried to include all of the great stories about Mike that would be the longest eulogies ever! Just know that the entire EggHead family is there in spirit!

    Have a GREAT day!

Although we had emailed back and forth a few times, I first met Mike at an OKC Eggfest. He was telling me all about his thoughts on cooking ribs as he was tending his cook. I was really looking forward to tasting them when he pulled them off, which would be in another hour or so. I was forced to leave the fest to take care of a matter for awhile. Later, I was able to rejoin the fun. With all that Mike had going on: cooking the ribs, answering everyones questions, feeding the masses, teaching a rib class, etc., he still hunted me down and said "Hey! I saved you some ribs! Lets go over and get them." With that, he excused himself from a small crowd so that I could taste his food. Mind you, I found out that his ribs were always devoured in about one minute flat, and he was concerned enough about me to hold some back because I might be able to return.
In a world in which many who gain a bit of celebrity let it go to their heads, Mike was one who genuinely cared about the feelings of others. He even expressed concern for that which had called me away and said he hoped everything was alright.
    Mike was a class act.

Several years ago, Mike allowed me to post his Baby Back Rib Class article on my cookin' blogsite. I added the following after hearing of his passing....

On July 4th, 2010 "Car Wash Mike" McKernan passed away. Mike was a true BBQ ambassador, proud to be an Egghead, and was one of the most distinguished members of the Big Green Egg Forum. He will be missed but never forgotten. I will remember him as being quick to help out the younger cooks and the old hands alike, always handing out good advice, and he never tired of answering the same questions over and over. There is no doubt that Mike is responsible for teaching thousands of folks to barbecue ribs. Since posting Mike's rib method in the summer of 2007, this has been one of my most popular pages.

  • Thank you for the information. I am not surprised by this response. He was an awesome human being. Please keep his family in your prayers, esp his parents they are despondent.

    Well said Vance.

Although, I never met Mike face to face we had a good number on phone calls and emails. I enjoyed Mike sharing some of his struggles and successes during our talking back and forth.

  • Chuckles,

Mikey spoke so fondly of you quite a bit...sorry he didn't get to bring you to OKC this spring as he had planned

Please consider coming to OKC next April as Mikey was to contend in the Iron Egg Chef Grand Championship Cookoff, where the 5 Champions from the preceeding years face off....he "told" me "You are going to sous for me." Was really looking forward to that, too.

Here is a pic of Mike judging the OKC 2009 OKC Iron Egg Chef comp, a big thrill for him

Here is a pic of Mike "posing" for a pic with the 2009 winner from OKC at the Denver 2009 Eggfest, Kim Price AKA Desert Filly. Mike cooked all day in his usual doo-rag, then put the chef's hat on for the pic and took it right off afterwards. He didn't like to boast.

For all his accomplishments and EGG fame, Mike was always so humble. He will remain Larger Than Life to many of us.
