A couple weeks ago I posted that I bought two rectangular cast iron grates that were 13 x 16 each in order to use one to make a 13" diameter grate for my small. Finally found the time to cut it out yesterday. It only took about 1 hour with a sabre saw and it cost two metal cutting blades. I then ground off the sharp edges and presto I had one cool looking circular grate. Then I heated it with a 750° fire and seasoned it with Criso and repeated that again so it has a nice shiny black appearance to it. Seeing that BGE doesn't sell one for the small this little bit of effort was worth it IMHO!

  • RRP,
Does BGE offer a cast iron grate for the big egg. I'm looking into buying an egg and would love a cast iron grate.[p]Thanks,[p]Brian in Muskegon

    Brian in Muskegon,
yes it does - but only for the large BGE. Since I do all my nuke cooks on my small I wanted the c/i for it to burn the grill marks on let alone do the super sear trick. I have to wonder out loud though just how heavy is that man-hole-cover for a large. I don't know if it's just the awkward angle or what but using my grill lifter I need both hands to safely pull out the c/i and control it while doing so.

OTOH I make my living with my head while sitting on my butt, so maybe my wrist and arm strength isn't the best! LOL

RRP,[p]I'm with you on how heavy that large cast iron grid is. I've pinged LawnRanger for a grid lifter for that unit, but no product yet. Maybe if we both expressed interest we could get one.[p]Chuck

chuckls, I thought you were holding up that '66 427 big block Vette with one arm while removing the oil plug with the other! I'm a Vette driver too.
