Suggestions on quickly bringing dome temp down?

I'm working on a small boston butt today and got the fire lit in the egg this morning. However, I made the big mistake of walking away from the egg after I lit is so that I could quickly run an errand. By the time I got back, the temp was up over 550! I'm trying to get the dome temp down to the mid 200s in a short time so that I can get the pork on and get it started. But the egg just retains heat so well!!! I have all of the vents closed, but is there any way that any of you know of to accelerate this process?[p]Thanks!!!

    K2,
Try covering your fire with a load of charcoal, and cracking your vents to a slit. Should come down qickly.
    Good luck, and happy cookin!

K2, Shut the bottom and top vents almost completely, and occasionally "burp" the hot air out by briefly opening the lid.[p]Been there, done that.

    K2,
Try the following:[p]Carefully open the top, burping it and watching out for flashback, and leave it open for a minute or so with the bottom draft vent closed. 550º isn't all that hot, so you should be able to get the temp back under control fairly quickly by letting the Egg "breathe" a little. The fire may "rage" a bit with the top open, but the heat is mostly just dissipating via the open top. Put your butt on, crack the bottom and top vents after a couple of minutes, then monitor the dome temp closely until you get things back on track and stabilized.[p]Good luck,
    Bob

    K2,
I have never had any problems dumping water on my hickory chunks when I forget about them. Gets it from 600 to 200 in no time lol, and I do it freqeuntly though some people might not agree w/ my method.

Hey everyone, your suggestions were awesome. I added some more fresh lump and then burped some of that heat out every so often. The temp really came down quickly. The butt is now going on! Thanks for everyones help!!!
