Thank you to all for the phone calls and emails. The doctor said the wifes surgery (knee replacement) went well yesterday but she's still a little drugged up. The well wishes really mean a lot and I've saved them for her to read after the hospital stay as she won't be able to mow the yard for a few months ;)
Thank You again to my friends and extended family

Hey Pat I didn't know about it and I wish her well. My sil is recovering from a total knee last Wednesday. Cindy and I are taking her and her son a butt to eat on tonight. You are a little busy helping her I know. That's good because it brings people closer. Tim :)

Isn't that a relief when the doctor says everything went fine? Now, all I can say is "poor Pat"....you are in for one heck of a time for the next few weeks. Call me and I'll fill you in on the details about the Chicken :S 281-353-7961.

Give Wendy a big hug and tell her we are thinking of her.

    Yea, what Spring Hen said.

Not everything you've read or was told about recovery is true. Some stories you were told about fast recovery is plain BS (apologies to the bull). They probably include those who only had partial knee replacements (they recover faster but it's still no walk in the park). And finally, not everyone has miscellaneous problems such as cramps, charlie-horses, restless leg syndrome, anemia, chills, constipation, nausea, burning skin, no appetite, no response to pain drugs, etc, not to mention sleepless nights where all you can do is wander the halls.

But here's a couple of hints to make recovery easier:
Buy a good size gel-pack or two and insert into a pillow case. Then keep it in the freezer until needed. Use it frequently. Mine is 16” X 24” and was about $35. (I’ll use it to chill down food for Eggfests)
Buy a heating pad, preferably one that also vibrates and keep it plugged in near her favorite chair.
Keep some extra blankets near the bed and by her chair to help ward off the chills. My teeth actually chattered I was so cold.
Keep a record of the times she takes her pain meds. It's very easy to overload on them and if you wait too long it takes a while to catch back up. Meanwhile she suffers.

Speaking of pain meds, Vicodin in the 10/325 like I'm taking doesn't have much impact on me, even taking two at a time. I've been tempted to take a third one but never did. The side effects are just too dangerous to mess with. I asked for stronger and they were ready to prescribe Percocet but I declined after reading what can happen with that stuff, up to and including home invasion by those who may be aware that you have it.

Sleep is her friend. Unfortunately, she will wake up in the middle of the night. The best thing is to brew a cup of chamomile tea (yes it works to help go back to sleep and has sort of a calming affect). I was prescribed Ambian to help me sleep but the first three times it didn't work at all. Finally, last night it worked and I got five glorious hours of non-stop sleep in my chair.

Finally, be patient with her. The drugs do strange things to people, not to mention what the endless pain does to your morale. Trying to read or watch TV isn't worth the effort because nothing on TV is as intense as what is going on in her mind and body.

Finally, the therapy is good because it gives her something to do to help get her life back together. I was disappointed that I couldn't bend my knee 90° three days after surgery, then after a week, then after two weeks, but my therapist said not to worry, I'm doing fine and everything takes time. I did 95° today. It's good to see and feel the progress.

Tell her I know every pain and emotion she is feeling right now. It WILL get better.

    Hi FlaPoolman,

Some how I missed a post somewhere along the line and didn't know. I pray your wife isn't in to much discomfort and has a speedy recovery. Seams like a good idea to have it done while it is to hot to do anything down here then to wait till cooler weather an wish you were out playing golf or something.

make sure to fill that hole in your bathroom so she doesn't fall in it... at least that is what would happen around here if the circumstances are the same ;)

Hey Pat I've got an idea about your yard. So, think about getting a goat and tie the goat in the yard until all the grass is eaten then plan a big party and BBQ the goat! :woohoo: That would solve everything. Tim
