I just came across a post by accident asking if anyone knew of a website that had information about lump charcoal. They said it even had pictures of all the bags.
If you Google "Lump Charcoal" the first hit is the Lump Charcoal Database.
If you Bing "Lump Charcoal" the first hit is the Lump Charcoal Database.
If you Yahoo "Lump Charcoal" the first hit is the Lump Charcoal Database.
Sigh, is it really worth it? :woohoo:

You know, sometimes I wish someone would do quantitative comparisons of the different brands of lump that are out there...wouldn't it be neat to have all that information in one place?
-
That's funny. Yesterday I was looking for info on lump temps and such. You must have had 6 of the top 10 hits no matter how I searched for it.

TNW,
Another good reason to have a links page here.

And if you ask that question on this Forum the most likely reply is a link to the Lump Charcoal Database....
Who woulda thought? -
The only problem I see with that Steve, is the fact that people make money off those hits (sometimes) or selling goods/services via those links. Then comes the question of who gets linked on the links page? Could get challenging that way.

You can't fix stupid. Just pray if posts about using a weed burner to light his lump...

TNW,
Sir, i must say i have spent countless hours perusing your website. I have saved numerous images of tables (for future ideas) that i liked from your website to my computer. I have enjoyed the various articles from recipes to the "how to's" and misc. faqs. Your website is a great hub of information, much like this forum. So, even though i have never thanked you for this, i'm sure there's countless others who enjoy your efforts and who try to reap the benefits of your (and others who help) hard work. So i'm sorry i haven't said it before, but thank you very much for your contribution! Rock on! -
When is Doug sending you that check HAHAHAHA

It is very worth it, unless you almost burn the house down :silly:

Steve
thank you.
we need a links sticky or page in the worst way IMO. i think it would be extremely useful and reduce some redundancy in threads and then maybe we could get automatic 7 days live threads instead of 3...
and i know i can change the number..... everytime i refresh..... -
I think that is so cool, along with all the other good stuff you do for us 'Not-Know-It-Alls.'
The first site I refer new Eggheads to is yours and the first site I refer long-time Eggheads who are looking for good advice is yours. You da main man.
At least we're all on the same page.... Yours.

I saw the post the other day too.
Amazing, I can somewhat understand the original post by TNW, but some of the responses that followed.
Could it be possible the person who posted is new to the forum and or new to even knowing what lump is?
Possibly the member somehow ran across the page but didn't know how to find it again or even remember TNW name.
Sure most if not all the posters in this thread know how to find the page pretty easily. Why infer the person is stupid or was asking a stupid question or berate the person.
Wonder if anyone bothered to take 15 or so seconds to find, copy and paste the link below in order to help him/her out.

Just say'n.

If you go back and look, you will see that both responses contained links to The Naked Whiz's Lump Database.
-
As I said above, I didn't go back to the post and look to see if a link was posted or not. But, thanks to those that did post the link and help the person out.
And to those that complain about the question in this thread, it might better to take minute to post the link in the original thread. I've probably taken the same road myself a time or two. Just something to think about.

That's because they can't spell Goggle, Bling or Yawoo.

Yup. +1. I concur. Just as he has used your site, I am using his words to express my own though. LOL.
I've looked at that database. Since you're in Raleigh too (I am close enough), where do you get all that lump to test? Is there a good place to get it around here that I don't know of. Aside from HD or Lowes having it sometimes, true value and walmart I don't know where to go. -
Jason,
That was my thought. Wonder how many posts there would be directing folks to the links page?

Kent, my OP was intended to be totally funny, not critical at all. It's just that I wouldn't expect anyone to remember the website or name after a single visit, but if you knew you were looking for lump charcoal, every major search engine will give you the website as the first hit. Which is where I find the humor in it. Oh well... :-)The Naked Whiz

I've visited your site many times, and now as a new egg owner I'm finding myself there hour upon hour. Many thanks for all your work!!!! Now if I can only figure out if the plate setter legs go up or down with a baking stone, and other grates, etc., I'll be able to begin some SEERious cooking.
-
I know where you can get Wicked Good
-
I agree and my response wasn't intended for you. I recall in my early egg days I remembered Naked Whiz and used that to find the site - nakedwhiz.com at that time I was taken to a porn site. I then googled the same, naked whiz, saw some porn sites in the hits but also found your site. From that time on I remembered the entire name - for me it only took one time.
Just wanted the few folks posting to think and post some help rather than criticize or putting someone else down.

I bet that if people would learn to "google" then you just might be able to afford clothes, and you would just be The Whiz.

Best to you, Doug.

Just another who used to know you!I spent most of my money on good bourbon, and bad women...the rest, I just wasted!!

Kinda off topic, sorta...
But what I think would be extremely useful is a geographic text search index of lump charcoal.
Some of you may be wondering 'what the heck is THAT?'
Imagine a map of the USA, or the world even... with little dots on it. Each dot would represent a specific brand/mix/variety of lump charcoal that can be purchased/picked up locally in that geographic location.
So, imagine this workflow:
A user from Houston wonders what all the lump charcoal varieties that can be found in a 50 mile radius of Houston. He zooms into Houston, and *poof* just like that, he can instantly see all the varieties that are available in his geographic area.
Now, let's say he wants to see all the lump varieties around Houston with some certain criteria, such as "reader score higher than 4", then the map would remove all dots that didn't satisfy said criteria, and only show the ones that do.
Cool stuff eh? Kinda like a GPS text search on iPhones in a way. -
Rezen...Love it! And you just volunteered to put this all together for us, right?? Sounds like a great idea...let us know when it is done!
Be well, and happy eggin'....but get the app done first... :silly:
