BGE Chiminea

Has anyone got one of these out there? I am curious about its performance compared to regular terra cotta chimineas. The BGE seems pretty small compared to most of the ones you see at those home improvement stores (won't mention either by name since I don't like Tony Stewart OR Jimmie Johnson). [p]Another question. I saw a link here to a raincap sold at the Jimmie Johnson store for my BGE, but it didn't look like it'd fit over or around my daisy wheel. Is there a bigger one or another option for me since it's supposed to rain tonight / tomorrow and I am planning a lo and slo butt tonight?[p]Any information you can provide would be most helpful.[p]

Mark, I have the chiminea. You're right, it's a small chiminea. But, since it's made from the same thing as eggs, it can be fired up right after a rain storm and not crack. Here in Tampa, most of our cold weather is preceded by rain, so that's nice. It can handle nuclear temps, so we build some pretty serious fires in it, mostly with oak, hickory, mesquite and pinion chunks. Also, it looks pretty sweet on my deck.

    Mark Backer,
I got the 6" rain cap after seeing it here on the forum. It could be slammed over the daisy wheel, but I took tin snips and made a vertical cut through the ring section and spread it to fit easier. It would still take a really nasty storm to blow it off.[p]I also took of about an inch all the way around on the ring section so that air flow was not interfered with.[p]-smokeydrew

Borders,[p]That sounds awesome. My biggest concern was heat output. I am thinking of getting one for my brother and sister in law, but it would be replacing their relatively large terra cotta one, and their concern would be output. [p]Based on the egg, I think the output would be great.

smokeydrew,[p]That sounds awesome. I think I am going to pick one up at lunch today and do that myself. [p]Note to self: But some tin snips also. And I think I'm going to get a mapp torch for lighting purposes. I know it's not as organic as the wood chips and parafin, but I've got meat to cook, dammit!![p]Thanks everyone for your help on these and all of my moronic questions.

    Borders,
Do you have anything under the chimnea as to not damage the deck? I'd like to one but was worried about temps and the sparks etc. on the concrete pool deck. Any problems with that?

  • Mark Backer,
The rain cap posted on this forum some time ago, is the new/replacement 6" shanty top for the current one(the sqare one) in stock at JJ's store. I had to go to a couple of stores to find the pictured one because they are just beginning to change over their inventory. It fits real snuggly over the daisy wheel top. I haven't had to use mine yet; but given the design, I think you are going to have to have your egg stable before putting it on. I think adjusting the daisy wheel might prove to be a challenge with it on.

BucsFanJim,[p]The stand is the same stand that comes with either the small or mini (can't remember which), so you're okay there.

SMOKIN' MIKE,[p]I wouldn't be using it for steaks and stuff. Only for low and slows where the daisy is pretty much closed anyway. It might require minor modification, but it wouldn't be too bad.[p]can't wait to get one anyway because the wife thinks it would "look cute."

    Mark Backer,
    Thanks Mark,
I was aware that it came with the stand...but was probably a little paranoid about the nuclear temps etc... I'll probably have one by the time it cold enough here to warrant it.

BucsFanJim, It comes with a nice screen that I keep in place whenever I'm not there. I keep mine on a wood deck, so I am concerned. The fire us usually pretty low when I call it a night.
I really like mine, and am praying for an errant August cold front. I'm not holding my breath.[p]Scott
