Where to get Ozark Oak in the SF Bay Area?

I live in the San Francisco, CA bay area. Does anyone know where I can buy a bag? I'm going to smoke some ribs this weekend and am all out of the BGE lump that my XL BGE came with. I can get Lazzari mesquite, but I hear mesquite isn't good for smoking. I took a look at nakedwhiz and it look like the Ozark Oak has the best reviews from actual customers.

BTW, I LOVE this site!

    I can't be 100 percent certian...but I dont think you'll find a bag anywhere close.

Call Smitty from EggsbytheBay @ 408) 394-2471. He can give you the 411 on what brands are available...as well as the 3 or 4 premium brands he carries!

I did some ribs yesterday using Royal Oak from Walmart and they came out great. You might need to call around to find which Walmart in your area carries it though. The Walmart closest to me does not, but one a little further away does.

Thanks for the suggestions. Someone at work actually noticed me on the eggheadforum. He lurks, but doesn't post much. He mentioned I try Lazzari Oak lump. He gets it down the street from where we work (about 7 minutes away) since they have a store/factory here. 40# bag for $15? Why not? I'm going to pick some up after work today and try it. I hope it's good as BGE lump sells for about $1/1 lb. The only other lump I've used is Lazzari mesquite which I hear mesquite is a big NO for low smokes.

I just posted this on a related thread. For three years I have used nothing but Ozark Oak. This weekend I tried some Royal Oak from WalMart. I could not tell any difference in the way it lit, burned, or ash production. While it did not have as many big pieces as Ozark it made no difference otherwise. Both get high marks from the Naked Whiz. If you can't find Ozark, go with Royal Oak (made in America version). It seems to be more readily available judging by this forum.

I have bought the Lazzari Hardwood lump from their main loacation in South San Francisco. I did not like it. It was too smoky. I use Royal Oak for pretty much everything. I will sometimes put a little Lazzari in though.

    Just my .02 worth

Thanks, Dave. I work in S. SF and Lazzari is an exit away. I might try a smaller 20# bag just to try it. I gotta pick up some apple/cherry smoking chunks anyway. I'll also stop by Walmart on the way home and see if they have any RO available.

Lazzari in South SF. I bought three 40# bags of oak and one 40# bag of orange which Smitty says has essentially no smoke flavor. The reason you see so much Lazzari mesquite is they supply all the steak restaurants in the Bay Area and you can always find it at OSH for $9.99 for a 20# bag.

How do you like the Lazzari oak? I just picked up a 20# bag for $9.40. Now I know where to get campfire wood too as they have almond, oak, hickory and others. I've never seen so many bags of charcoal/wood in my life!

If you arrange to get a pallet of Ozark Oak shipped out I'll take half. Biggest expense in charcoal is the freight.

We also carry the 17lb bags of RO, and Wicked Good is currently in stock...have you tried that?

Orange Lump is a true smoking secret, don't sleep on it.

Learning to use neutral flavors is the key.
