Mix smoke wood with Lump?

Lumpy Joe

Another post tonight!
I wonder if I should soak my wood chips first, then start the fire WITH the wood chips intermingled. For the past several years, I start my lump charcoal while my wood (mequite or apple etc) is soaking...then I sprinkle those chips on top of my lump charcoal. Maybe for a more even smoke the chips should be mixed through the lump charcoal. Any one doing this?

Don't soak. Don't soak, Don't soak ! :( Get you fire stabilized at your desired temp and put your chips on dry, then your meat :cheer:

Why no soak?

Soaking is only for gassers. The wood burns too quickly on gas....but the Egg controls the air intake. No problem with the fast burn. Use wood, chips or chunks straight out of the bag!

Soaking does absolutley nothing. You can soak wood chunks under water for 24 hours and if you cut it in half you will see the water has only soaked in about 1/32 of an inch. Put that on the fire and it causes steam for about 1 minute. Use dry chunks and chips.

I soaked when I first got my egg, was watching to much steven raichlen on bbq university or primal grill, but in all honesty all it did was kill my temperature when I was doing a low and slow. I do have a rule of thumb, if I am doing a shorter cook like smoking chicken or fish i use a handful of chips. If I am doing a long cook such as ribs or butt I use chunks and place several mixed in with the lump so I get continuous smoke for several hours
