Elevated Grid - Recommendations?

Hello everyone -
Can someone recommend an elevated grid? I see many recipes require "direct on an elevated grid." I'm assuming this means that there is something lifting the grid off the fire ring up to the felt line or slightly below. This would be very convenient so I wouldn't have to reach into the grill as much.
Any recommendations?
Andy

I use the original grid but raised on two...sometimes three split fire bricks (on top of the firebox). It's not the most steady since I don't have anything bolted down but it works pretty good. Especially for $3

Look on the Ceramic Grill Store web site, they have the WOO 2 or just use some bricks. There are alot of pretty cool ideas on the forum for home made rigs too.

Ceramic Grill Store has an eggcellent selection of after market products, and as mentioned, you can build something pretty cheaply using an extra grid and some bolts or u-bolts

I really like that Idea

I like the "Adjustable Rig" from the "Ceramic Grill Store web site"

I crumple up three pieces of tin foil and set them around the fire ring. When you set the grid on it, just push it down a little and it sets into the foil balls and it is pretty sturdy. Hope this helps.

Could someone tell me why you need an elevated grill? I'd imagine you just don't want your food too close to the fire? Would using a plate setter suffice instead? Just wondering.... ;-)
I like the homemade one there with the U-bolts.. very imaginative! :-)

yes it is for direct cooking away from the coals...with a plate setter it wouldn't be direct....
Also you now have multiple racks for several pork butts or racks of ribs.... -
I just use a second fire ring which elevates the grid about flush with the bottom half. Works great when cooking burgers or chicken, etc. when you want to prevent flareups and burning.

Go to TheNakedWhiz.com website. It shows you how to make one cheaply(with pictures). And by not having to pay a lot for an aftermarket product, you can spend the money saved on other eggcessories

there is more heat the higher in the dome you go. So if you are cooking spatchcock or burgers or something, you can get that high heat without having to worry about the meat getting too charred or in some cases ruined.
