Does the daisy wheel need to be seasoned?

edited -0001 30 in EggHead Forum
I've done two cooks with my egg, already my daisy wheel is showing some rust and my egg was leaking smoke out of the gasket in a 6 inch area to the right rear. Now I've read posts to loosen the top ring and reseat the top, do I put the white plastic thingys on those bolts first? The top seemed to be sitting fine with the first cook, and I know the bolts were tightened really well when we put it together.

    Just a'grillen,
With enought cooking time, the daisy wheel will season itself. A good way to keep it from rusting is to simply put it on the cooking grid when you shut down the fire.

  • jwitheld,[p]Funny.......seriously. Is everyone elses rusting after just 2 cooks? I've even kept a cover on it when it cooled off.

Grillen, When my wheel looks dry and rusty, I season it by spraying wesson or crisco on it.

  • Just a'grillen,
The longer you cook on the Egg, the more seasoning it will get. When you finish for the day, put the ceramic top back on the Egg and the daisy inside the Egg.[p]Jerry

    Just a'grillen,
If you leave a new daisy wheel out where it can get wet, it will rust. After a few cooks, it should start to get coated with grease and it will season itself. You can also give it a light spray of any cooking oil to prevent rust until it starts to season itself. The daisy wheel on my new medium was rusting after a few days. No problem. I sprayed it with some olive oil (it was in the sprayer) and now no more rust.[p]TNW

  • Just a'grillen,[p]Mine was getting a little rusty, so I just sprayed some olive oil on it.

When new, I slathered it with Crisco and then stuck it in the oven for 30 minutes at 300. That seems to work. Just don't forget to turn your exhaust fan on or your house smells like my Grandma's in Opelika, AL after she cooked up some chicken.[p]I also use the original top and put the daisey wheel inside the egg afterwards.

    The Naked Whiz,
I just left it alone. It started rusting about 3 or 4 days after I bought the egg. Now there is no rust, must have seasoned itself.[p]

  • stike,[p]I store my daisy wheel in the egg. Right after a cook before the cool down I put that boy in the egg and put the cap on the top. Keeps it fine.[p]JimB
