Second egg, what size?

I am looking to add a second egg, I currently have a large. The second egg will be used mainly for side dishes such as atbs or veggies and also when only me and wife are eating. I have also thought about carrying it for tailgating during football season. Any suggestions on what would be the best size for the second egg?[p]Thanks

Mark,[p]I have a large and a small. Perfect combination for all my needs. The small is a great cooking machine.[p]

    Mark,
My second egg was a small, and I have absolutely no regrets. The small cooks steaks better than the large in my opinion. You can see some various ways to cook indirect on the small egg on my website, in the tips section..HTH[p]Wess

    Mark,
I'm in the same boat, I think the small would be great for firing up lava temps for searing steaks and roasts or cooking sides, fish steaks/fillets, etc. Not that the large egg is bad no no, but I think there is a degree of waste when it comes to the charcoal needed to bring the large egg up to lava like temps or cooking small meals. I think the mini may be too small, 9"s doesn't give you much space and may be impossible to indirect cook. Just my 2 cents.

Mark,[p]I couldn't agree more with the other responders. I have a large and small and use the small for the exact same purposes you propose. While my butts were cooking on the large last weekend, I did a Vidalia onion pie, a pot of beans and some ABT's on the small. You're only other choices are the mini (too small for sides), the medium (great for sides but a pain to lug to the games) and the XL (whenever it arrives). Get a small. You won't regret it.[p]Paul

Mark, I use a small 90% of the time. It does weigh about 65 lbs as opposed to 30 lbs for the mini.A little heavy for tailgates, but it is a great cooker. You can do indirect on either the small or mini but space on the mini is really limited...

Mark,[p]I'm trying to make the same decision. I've got two large eggs--ceramic and clay. The mini looks like a good burger or steak cooker for two, but the small looks big enough to handle a sizable piece of meat.[p]Mayber we can get some help from small owners on two points. I think there was some discussion a week or so ago about difficulty gettng the small up to high temp of about 700. Is that a problem or operator issue?[p]Also, when you load a small up with lump, how long will it go at about 225?

    katman,
I can get my small up to 750 as long as I make sure it is cleaned out and has good lump with not much chips/dust. [p]I've not done a low/slow on it, so I can't tell how long it would go. With extruded coconut or Wicket Good Competition Blend, I'd have to think it could go 20 hours easy, though.

katman,[p]Never have had a problem getting mine up to around 1000 *[p]I have done several 15 hr cooks at low temps and had fuel to spare.[p]Hope this helps.[p]

Mark, I'm adding absolutely nothing new here, which is my specialty. I started with a large, and then a small. I use my small 2/3 of the time. It's an awesome cooker.[p]Scott

  • Mark,
Answers are getting pretty boring here; I have a Large and a Small, and would hate to part with either. Great duo.

YB,[p]And that, Larry, is why you're the man. I love that deck of yours without the five eggs, but with them....ahhhh.[p]Do you have a couple or three guru's, or how do you monitor all of them?[p]Man, you're like a small restaurant. Can I come over this weekend?

YB,[p]You laugh, but I'm just north of atlanta, and with a setup like that, it would not be hard to convince the wife and meat-loving child to make a trek to beautiful augusta. [p]LOL

    Mark,
How big a boy are you?? (as Roy D. Mercer would say? :))
If you are gonna tote an Egg to a game, I doubt you would want much more than a small. It weighs all I want to carry anywhere. ;)[p]The mini is real small and I thought I would use it for travel, but I use the small instead.[p]Apparently me and TimM have the only Small BGE's that won't get very hot. I have left my small wide open for a long time and 'does not' get over 550 or 600 and when I open it and put in the meat, it goes right back down to 450~500 type ranges.??
Why?, I don't know. I have checked all the obvious reasons but I just went back to the large for my high temperature cooks. I use the small occasionally for burgers, corn, brats, etc. but I would say only 10% of my cooks I use it.
But for portability, I say get the small and you will most likely be satisfied.
