May Haw Jelly on Texas Biscuits
Spring Chicken
Posts: 10,255
Forgot to mention that I baked some genuine Texas Biscuits this morning and made then even better with some fresh butter and May Haw Jelly.
I know some of you from up north don't know what May Haw Jelly is because it's a southern thing. But it sure tasted good on those hot, crunchy outside-soft in the middle Texas Biscuits.
No photos of 'em butter'd and jelly'd up but here they are in the pan.

Got three biscuits left for dessert tonight.

I've got the May-Haw. Just need to find a biscuit pan in the shape of Louisiana.
I actually forgot how good the two match up, gonna have to do a batch of biscuits tomorrow, thanks for reminding me. -

Here you go...
"Mayhaw is the name given to the fruit of three species of hawthorn that are common in wetlands throughout the southern United States.
Mayhaws grow in moist soil in river and creek bottoms under hardwood trees. The fruit ripens in late April through May, thus the name mayhaw. The fruit is also found in bayous surrounding lakes, such as Caddo Lake on the Texas/Louisiana border. Mayhaws are often collected out of the water from boats to be used to make jelly.
Families used to go on outings to collect mayhaws and create stockpiles of the jelly to last throughout the year, but the tradition has declined with the increasing urbanization of the South and the destruction of the mayhaw's native habitat. The fruit has also been cultivated to grow outside of wetlands and this is increasing the source of the jelly.
Many communities associate themselves with the fruit because of its reputation as a celebrated delicacy of Southern U.S. cuisine. For example, Colquitt, Georgia is considered the Mayhaw capital of the world; El Dorado, Arkansas, Marion, Louisiana and Starks, Louisiana all celebrate a mayhaw festival each May. (From Wikipedia)"
Now you know.

Sounds fantastic Spring! When I lived up north we used to collect Beach Plums for jelly/jam. They like the same real estate as poison ivy! Guess it was a good thing I don't get poison ivy.

But you can buy it on line. On line is just like Alice's Restaurant.

When you make your biscuits use club soda instead of water or milk.

And Poison Ivy doesn't make good jelly.

Never had it before. I grew up with cane syrup that we made ourselves. But I'll sure keep my good eye open for some next time I'm in one of those 'homemade everything' stores.
Thanks.
