[p]First thanks to everyone who answered my question on Saturday.[p]I want to do my first butt, but I am always confused as to what to get. I live in RI on the east coast so the meat names seem to be diffrent. Am I ok with a shoulder?[p]Would be grateful for any help in getting this going with the right item[p]David

David,[p]A pork shoulder is not exactly the same as pork butt. Pork shoulder is the cut of meat starting at the front leg shoulder joint down to the knee joint. A pork butt is the part of the shoulder on mr. pig's body up to the shoulder joint, it includes part of the shoulder blade. A pork shoulder is still good to bbq. If you're looking for pork butt, you may see it called boston shoulder, boston butt, pork butt or you may see blade used.

Also, a shoulder may also be called a picnic, but that's not the butt. A shoulder will look similar in shape to a ham, with the skin all the way around the meat. You usually won't see skin on a butt. If you do, it's only going to be on one side.
