Picnic/Butt together

I went to Sam's just now and they had the 2 pieces of meat together and I thought it said picnic and boston butt and the price was really cheap. Should I but the pack and cook them both? Do I pull together and mix or leave them separate? Or do I just go to my butcher and buy a boston butt like I did before?

The picnic and boston is just a shoulder cut in half. They both make fine pulled pork if that is your plan.
Cooking them both together would be fine although they will likely be finished at different times because they are likely different sizes.
Buy both (because they are cheap) and throw on in the freezer 'til next time.
Hey, you're only 118 posts short of 'PLATINUM EGGER' GO YOU!
Cheers. -
You sure it wasnt 2 butts? The commonly come packed 2 per at the warehouse clubs.
-
My ploy would be to cook them both, side by side (monitoring the temp of each one individualy) and compare the taste results. I've Egged many butts, but not of the "picnic" variety. Please keep us updated!

Mark, I saw the same thing at my local SAMS but I took it to say Picnic/Boston Butt as in two names for same cut? I could be wrong but I would just ask the butcher there at Sams.
-
Can you take a picture of the two and post it? The picnic has a conical shape.
This is a whole shoulder with the picnic on the right.

You may be right. I saw the two together and I thought that it was too much meat. But I thought it said picnic. I know for sure it said shoulder and butt. What do I know
-
Jason, That's exactly what it said. So what does it mean.
-
I thought they both looked about the same in the package. Yes I will go back probably tomorrow or Thursday and I will either just take a picture or buy it and post it. It seemed so cheap from what I paid at my local grocery store before.
-
As has been said, butt is part of the shoulder.
-
I knew that. I just thought maybe they packaged the butt with the shoulder. I should of paid more attention to it. I'm thinking it was 2 butts together
-
Mark, they looked like two identical cuts in one package. I may go back today and pick some up and while I am there I will ask the butcher?
-
Yes Jason, I couldn't tell the 2 apart.
-
LOL, you say "butt with shoulder" but that you know that butt is part of the shoulder.....
Im guessing its 2 butts. -
lol...all these fancy terms
-
Mark, Is this what it looked like?
1.68/lb not bad i think. It is Boston Butt, don't know why I said Picnic my eyes must have been playing tricks on me!! -
Thanks Jason, yes that's it....what the hell do I know
Good price isn't it?
-
LOL I am with you there! I am new here too! It looks like a good price to me, I think I paid 1.99/lb last time I got it so I picked a pack up.
-
$1/lb is a good price to shoot for, and is/was fairly easy to find but there has been a spike or two in recent weeks with pork pricing. I'd say that is a fair deal everything considered.
-
Thanks. I guess I will cook 2 instead of 1. Nothing wrong with leftovers
-
My Sam's have never packaged a picnic and butt together. They have always been packages of 2 butts, FWIW.The Naked Whiz

Yes. like I've said I think I was wrong

Sometimes it is just too much work to read all the replies and find out what's already been said. The Naked Whiz

I'm sure. But it's a great learning experience and I value your help.
