After many years of service (circa 2002), I noticed that the cast iron grate that holds the charcoal is cracking. It's about 30% cracked and still functional for the moment. Is this a typical issue? I'm thinking about a proactive replacement.

If you decide to replace the charcoal grate I would recommend
the BBQ Guru Tubo Grate. ( I have had mine for one year. )
    The openings are adjustable.

Have a look at the you tube video.
My procedure now is to wiggle the turo grate to drop the ashes
I then add more charcoal & light.
I am please with the air flow through the grate.
  • My LBGE was purchased 12/8/08. The Fire Ring and Fire Box replacements are in the garage; 2 weeks ago noticed the Fire Grate was cracked
Nothing major, but had better get crackin' on that replacement, too.
Just glad the actual EGG is holding up...have seen others haven't been as fortunate :(

vgrundnh, Like they said it is a warranty item. I have been looking for one here lately and called about 5 dealers none of them stock one they have to order one. Just sayin you might want to get one asap for a backup. Tim ;)

Shazbot, The cast iron food grate carries a one year warranty. Like the one below.

The cast iron lump charcoal grate that goes in the firebox carries a life time warranty. Of Course it should not be rusty like this one.

That part is an integral component of your BGE - that dealer is clueless! One year!!! What a joke!!!

he definitely has a full stock. I called him about the grate and he said if it wasn't on the shelf take one out of one of the eggs because he just got 16 more large fire grates delivered.

Shazbot, Do what you want but when I had warranty issues I called the mothership and talked to Bruce Bohannon. He was the one that set me straight on what was under warranty then when I went to my dealer for warranty replacement parts and they bulked I quickly called Bruce and put them on the phone with him. I was also lucky I was able to get Bruce on the phone like that because he has a large area and is very busy. If you ever call him and they take a call back number leave your cell number because they will call you back it may not be right away. Tim :)

Thank you All for your help! Tim, I think I will just eat the $12.95 this time. These are very nice people, just a bit confused I guess. I will contact the Mothership if I have any other issues. Thanks Again!

that's too bad you got rooked and don't want to say anything - this way they will rip off other people the same way in the future. I've seen my dealer's inventory of replacement components and they must have at least 6 to 12 of nearly everything except domes and bases. They take great pride is serving their customers when they walk in with a problem they walk out with a replacement!
