Texan question on crab cakes

A friend just gave me a great looking crab cake recipe and I thought I would give it a try. Since you can count the number of times I've cooked crab cakes on less than one finger, I'm a little uncertain of the outcome.[p]Since real crab ain't cheap in San Antonio, Texas, I'm wondering if it would be a mortal sin to use the faux crab this first go around...or is that a real no-no?[p]I'm totally ignorant on this one. Hmmm. Not sure on that one. Can't hurt to give it a shot. I think the product will be quite different than the real thing, but should be interesting! The fake stuff I get around here is pretty salty though, so try it first and possibly hold back on the salt in the recipe you have. It has a different texture too, so you might need more of whatever you use as a binder.[p]Consider splurging on good crabmeat sometime, though. Nothing like the real thing, and they are pretty easy to cook.[p]Hopefully I got this post right!
