A place to rest your egg in New Orleans

Dear fellow eggers,[p]I haven’t posted on the forum since last year but have been lurking for a while and have gotten many great tips from the collective wisdom of the group![p]My wife and I have recently bought a small B&B here in New Orleans, we are a block away from the French Quarter and steps away from Frenchman St (which is where all of the great Jazz and Blues music clubs are located). [p]Most importantly, I have a new place to set up my large BGE![p]While racking our brains to figure out marketing strategies it hit me…the BGE forum, a better group of folks you could not possibly find….and they can cook. So, here is an open invite to come visit New Orleans and have access to a BGE away from home! Of course, we welcome those who travel with their mini’s and smalls and can put them up for the night along side of ours. [p]We will offer a discount off of our regular nightly rates to any BGEr’s that comes and cooks his/her favorite recipe with us. As a super extra special deal, I’ll offer a free weekend stay to anyone who would be willing to spend a good part the weekend constructing an new egg table with me. [p]Also, some very good friend just opened a BBQ shop here called “The Joint”, ”We’re always smokin” is their motto. They do great ribs, pork and brisket. I have been friends with the owners for some time and they are open to the idea of hosting a ‘que cook off. I’d love to have an eggfest at their place (date and time TBD obviously). Please respond if you think you are interested in a New Orleans/ Gulf Coast Egg fest.[p]Anyone interested about the B&B can just drop us a line at Bohemianarmadillo@msn.com[p]Eric and Rachel

    Eric,
Sounds great. My wife and I are due for a New Orleans trip pretty soon to visit her sister in Metairie. Sounds like fun. Wishing you lots of luck and good fortune.[p]Spring Chicken

A Louisiana Egggest would be just the ticket. The wife has been bugging me to take her to the Big Easy for sometime now. Maybe we could stay at your place. What are your rates?[p]When the details are all there email me and we'll be there fast.

    Eric,
Glad to here there's a new Q place open here in town. That's the one food group we're really missing here. So, where is The Joint?
Since I live here in town, won't need a place to stay, but if you email me some info, I can direct friends, etc when they're looking for a place.
Also, if you start working on an Eggfest here in town, let me know. I'd love to help.

Shelby,[p]The Joint is located in the By-Water on Poland St. right by the Naval Support center. There was a big write up about BBQ in the gambit here is the link. The jont is featured, for my money Pete and Jenny have the best pulled pork in town and the sauce is out of this world (served on the side of course). I will let you know when Big Easy Egg Fest planning starts.[p]http://www.bestofneworleans.com/dispatch/2004-06-22/cover_story.html[p]

Eric,[p]Would DEFINITELY come to a big easyfest. Was just talking to spouseshark the other day about going to NO. (He's only been to exotic places like Zimbabwe, but never NO). Thought it would be a great drive...eat good food, enjoy the sites...avoid Bourbon Street. But a fest would make it soooo worthwhile.[p]mSharque

MollyShark,[p]Just finished some steaks on the egg and have a chicken going for Sunday's brunch![p]Wife and I traded some ideas about how to put together a fest that would be worthy of both the BGE and NO. My wife works for Jazz Fest so she has some credentials (and know how) that puts my simple “hey, we can all cook together” ideas to shame. Anyway over a few drinks and some great food, we came up with some good ideas (we think). [p]I think we have the perfect venue for it. As you read in my first post, we have friends that opened a BBQ joint. While I thought that their backyard would be the perfect place, on reconsideration I think I have found a better place. Right down the street from "The Joint" is an amazing wine and beer store that is owned by an acquaintance of ours. He has a big (big for NO) yard behind his shop and hosts parties on the weekends. His shop is stocked with some of the finest wine and beer you can think of…. and it is cheap. I was sipping high end imported wheat beers for $2.00 each last weekend in his backyard while a great local band played. Thanks to the wonderfully progressive alcohol laws here, you can walk up to the cooler or wine rack, select whatever you want, pay for it and Chris will open it, pour it into the appropriate glass that has been chilled (or not) to the appropriate temperature, and then you can stroll out into the back yard to continue the festivities. [p]The set up would be perfect for about 8-12 couples with attendant kids and BGE gear, he has an area where he sets up bands - we could either have an improvised BGE jam or hire a band to provide music to BBQ by. There are a ton of places to stay in the neighborhood and it is close to all of the attractions that people want to see in NO. Our neighbor works for a local tour company so if anyone wants to go on a swamp, plantation, airboat, or haunted history tour, we can get a good deal. [p]But…here is the catch (there is always a catch),….because this is a city where people seem to shed their inhibitions…and because I love to try other people’s culinary experiments…. I would propose a twist to the event. Everyone must step a bit outside of their comfort level and serve up what they think is their most unique dish. This means…. no pulled pork, no brisket, no ribs… we can get that from my friends at The Joint, at this event we pull out the stops and serve our friends the best the BGE can offer! I think we will all benefit from the experience. [p]Through “The Joint’s” meat and seafood provider and through the wine and beer suppliers, we can get our hands on anything. This could be fun! Thoughts?[p]Eric

    Eric,
Sounds to me like you have all the bases covered. Now that you have us all reved up, what can we do with the mass of Eggheads who are ready to make the trip? [p]Spring (New Orleans Bound) Chicken

Eric,[p]Well I already did the "out of comfort" for everyone a couple Atlanta's ago, but if we limit it to food intended for humans, I'll have to get creative again.[p]Do you have someone who will be supplying Eggs? [p]mSharcue
