The other night I asked for help on how to reheat 7# of pulled pork in a convenient way as I didn't have access to a stove, oven or microwave and I needed to keep it warm over a period of time at the office. Well I received some hints - all which I appreciated, but none quite fit my circumstance. Well, I proceeded with my original idea of using a crock pot to warm it...and then I received an email from Dr Chicken with a killer hint that works extremely well when reheating beef and pork...it's almost a secret - cauz if you tell people they are apt to turn up their noses at the thought - but it WORKS! I merely dumped the pulled pork in the pot and then poured in one can of Coca-Cola. Pepsi will not work nor will the diet Coke...it has to be Coke Classic. Surprisingly it leaves no trace nor taste, but keeps the meat moist.

The raves were plentiful and that p/p disappeared in a hurry. While using Coke may seem unorthodox to you, but so didn't using cheap yellow mustard for qu'ing seem equally odd? It's probably best that you just don't tell people - just let them rave about the tender and moist meat. So it's our little secret. Thanks, Dr Chicken!

    RRP,
I've used this idea with beef, it eliminates the warmed over taste. Never thought about it with pulled pork, thanks. --Angie2B

  • RRP, the biggest lesson I've learned on the forum is: never say never...which means you might ought to give it a try even if you think it sounds awful...i.e. first thought on hot wings was that they could not compete with our already perfected baked then deep fried then sauced method and boy was I wrong there.

The Naked Whiz,[p]He said he used one can of Coke to moisten 7 pounds of pulled pork. But he never said if it was 7# before cooking or after.[p]There's something about Coca-Cola and barbecue that works. I have made excellent BBQ sauce using Coke, and also cooked a boston butt in a crockpot after pouring a Coke over top of it. Turned out great, but not as good as smoked. I bet you could marinate a butt in coke overnight before rubbing it and putting it in the egg.

    KevinH,
"I bet you could marinate a butt in coke overnight..." Now why does this smack me of the old addage about putting a wad of chewing gum in a glass of Coke? Grin! The meat would probably dissolve in a couple of days. (Lord I wonder what my gut must look like with all the Coke I've drunk...)[p]Kelly

Doug - the 7# reference was an approximation of the net results from a 8+# butt plus Food Savered packages of 4 compressed cups of pulled pork from an earlier cook. The crock pot holds 4 quarts and though it was all pulled and not compressed it was fairly solid and extremely difficult to stir. I have also used this on reheating beef, but never thought about p/p until Dr Chicken told me he does it as he does cater jobs and folks can't tell it from freahly pulled. The Coke is truly a saver for beef as I hate that warmed over taste, but not this way. BTW when the meat was all gone the only thing in the bottom appeared to be clear water - no tell-tale Coke brown or anything!

    RRP,
I love this site...I learn so much! That makes sense though I would have never thought to use Coke on leftovers. My Mom has basted fresh hams with Coke for years. Great tip.
