How You Can Order La Bomba Sauce and More About It

Hi everyone,
There have been a lot of posts and questions about La Bomba, which got me curious about this sauce. I live in the Little Italy section of Boston, so I hit the street to do some research.
This sauce comes from the Calabria region of Southern Italy and is commonly referred to as Bomba Calabrese. The key ingredient is the Calabrian hot cherry pepper. Other ingredients include olive oil, mushrooms (Lactarius deliciosus), eggplant, artichokes, salt, vinegar, garlic, black pepper, oregano, and bay leaves.
In my neighborhood, you can purchase this at Saulmeria Italiana. For those of you not in Beantown, you can order it online from them http://www.salumeriaitaliana.com/catalog/pantry/antipasti/bomba-calabrese ($7.50/one 6.34 ounce jar made by Coluccio). If you are in Wisconsin you can also purchase this here:
http://www.ilmercatoitaliano.net/Brand/Coluccio-Imported-Italian-Foods/Coluccio-Bomba-Calabrese-Sauce.
However, this is not the same brand that many people refer to on this forum. I have not tried the forum's preferred version of this sauce.
The brand many people on the forum mention is Aurora Allessia La Bomba (http://www.auroraimporting.com/catalogue/?b2_catalogue_productSearchID=2248&category=51). Aurora is actually a Canadian company, but they have been granted permission to export some products to the US, including La Bomba. La Bomba is available from them directly. You can reach them by e-mailing Garry Janda. His e-mail address is gofast at simcoe dot net. A case of 12 10 ounce jars cost $84US plus $34US for shipping, or you can order only 6 Jars for $48US plus $22US for shipping. However, many forum members have mentioned that these jars have poor seals and tend to leak during shipping. You can also supposedly order this from Greco Imports in Chicago, but their e-mail account does not work and their website does take on-line orders. You can call them at (630) 221-1001 to inquire.
Happy Egging!

Great information. Thanks!!
As for Greco, you can't order online and when I pick mine up it's a cash only deal. -
I just ordered some from Salumeria Italiana to try it out, they only ship UPS Second Day or Overnight so shipping was a little steep but if its good stuff I will buy a case next time. Thanks for the info!

Great info.
I think I will order some and see how it compares to the original "Canadian Crack" - La Bomba ! :woohoo: -
Let me know the outcome of your taste test.

boston_stoker,
There are several manufacturers that make la bomba antipasto. This is what is in the Allesia brand.

I wasn't implying there are limited manufacturers. I said it was a traditional sauce from a region of Italy, which implies there could an infinite number of people who make it and a numerous ways it is made. It is just like me saying the very popular Bolognese sauce originates from Bologna, Italy and typically is a tomato sauce containing ground meat.
I was simply providing information about the sauce, including what it traditionally is made from, as well as, a couple of online sources where people can purchase it. -
boston_stoker,
I apologise if my post seemed offensive. I meant none. There are probably five or six versions of la bomba available in Canada.

I tried that recipe Mike and it wasn't even close in flavor. It was good just really different. -RP

i would agree it would be different, but still good. needs real peppers, not flakes and different olives and i think the recipe could be improved easily. at the rate labomba gets eaten, you need gallons on hand, those little jars are teasersfukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

no, i've already told four people about it, three of which know nothing of the product...... -
Molly,
Little hard to fit a dozen of those in a suitcase. Seriously though, that is made for Aurora foods, the importer of the Allesia. I believe Tutto Calabria makes it and it isn't the same as the Allesia. You have had the Tutto Calabria haven't you?
