I've seen a number of people on this forum swear by the "Thermapen" thermometer because of its speed and accuracy.
Instead of asking a newbie question, I did a newbie search and found the following website for my fellow newbie's.
http://thermoworks.com/products/thermapen/splashproof_thermapen.html?gclid=CK7O-c_fkaECFRBx5QodZzQ6QQ
Looks pretty fancy...but does come with a $96 price tag. Dang...my BGE father's day list is growing quite large...looks like I'm going to have to grill even more often to build up some more brownie points.

They are worth 3 times that! The good cooks that turn into phenomenal cooks because you have it WAY outweigh the cost!

Had one and sold it...replaced it with a $15 version that I got as a gift that in testing gave me the same temps...speed difference was about 2-3 seconds at the most. I would spend the money on a DigiQ before I would buy one of those again personally. Just my two cents however and there are a LOT of people that think it is one of the 'you can't live without it' device on this forum.Visit my blog, dedicated to my Big Green Egg Recipies at http://www.bigtsbge.blogspot.com You can also follow my posts on FaceBook under the name Keep On Eggin' or the link http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Keep-On-Eggin/198049930216241

As per your post below-you don't own a Themapen, or as you put it therapen and can't cook a hamburger on an EGG. Not much value in your posts or opinions.

I already got three!

I bought one about 4 months ago and bought the whole family (both sides) one for Christmas. Still get thanks every time we talk to them. Food is so much better cooked to the right temp

AMEN!
No dry burgers here!

I don't have one--I use a $25 probe thermometer w/timer & alarm function. It takes about 5-15 seconds to register a temp (depends on how high & the ambient starting temp). I use it for bread, meats, etc. Works great, and you can set it to alarm when it hits a certain temp. I've found that I just don't have a need for "instant" temp (not even in candymaking, certainly not in cooking meat).

Themapens are available at a discount from one of our forum members. Do a search for themapens on the forum, click on "Thermapens at OKC fest", this will take you to "Mollyshark". E-mail her and you are in business. I ordered mine this morning.
