Any suggestions of healthy cooks? I'm the heaviest I've ever been at 185 and it's killing me. We love chicken but how many spatchcock chickens can you cook...lol
Speaking of, I'm doing another one tonight but didn't have time marinade it in Italian dressing so I was thinking s&p and a little DP shakin the tree rub. Can Italian dressing be injected? I could do beer can chicken but from what I've read on here spatchcock is better
Ok one more thing, is it possible to do a chicken on the lg and also cook a porterhouse steak on it also? I know the steak should be done direct and the chicken indirect with the platesetter.
Thanks, Mark

you can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it
  • I've done some various vegetable kebobs. You could easily add a little meat into the mix if you wanted to.

I am a bit of a "fitness buff", and eat a very strict diet, with only 1-2 cheat meals a week on Saturday. Everything i eat is calculated.

Stirfry's(chicken, lean beef, etc) with brown rice/veggies.

    Chicken

Lean Sirloin, Eye of round roasts, etc.

    Turkey(burgers, breast)

There are a ton of possibilities.

    How tall are you?

That's a great idea. I saw some nice kebobs on here somewhere but they were cooked on the adjustable rig thing (I forgot what it was called) and I don't have that yet.

5'10, I use to be a total nut about what I ate. Year 2000 I was almost as big then, so I dropped the weight but eating right and running marathons, but last year I had surgery on my ankle and haven't got back into it and with a lot of beer put the weight back on. I was down to 146 at one point...oh well :(

Stir fry sounds great also, but I need to buy a wok. Is there a certain wok that I should buy or anyone from a store would work?

Honestly you can't go wrong with lean proteins/ veggies, and "good carbs"

I usually like to eat any carbs earlier in the day though.

You can cook kabobs right on the standard BGE grid direct...just keep an eye on em....and you got it right..the rig is callled "An adjustable Rig"...

I cooked a Spatchcocked chicken a couple of days ago with nothing more than some olive oil and Shaking the Tree rub. Did it direct. Delicious, juicy and tender like always. Had enough for a sandwich the next day and it was as good as a Thanksgiving turkey sandwich.

There's lots of good recipes on here for those seeking to lose weight but why give up any of your favorites? Instead, just eat less of a good thing. Doesn't work but it's worth a try.

Of course I'm telling you this while preparing for my Mexican Night Out, complete with margaritas, to victually entertain all 4656 ounces of me.

  • Grilled veggies: asparagus, eggplant, green beans, romaine, radicchio, corn on the cob. Grilled ratatouille.

Roasted veggies: brussels sprouts are a favorite.

    Stir-fries.

Fish, fish, fish and other seafood.

Lean meats:pork loin and tenderloin. You like chicken, try other fowl (turkey).

Use leftover egged meats to make other healthy meals (soups, tacos, etc).

    Oh yeah, and fish.

I almost always cook my chicken direct, but yes, you can go from direct to indirect or vice-versa. Just give the egg time to make the temperature change you need.

Most importantly, however, is portion control. Split that porterhouse between two, three or four people...or eat part and have leftovers...mmmm, steak sandwich.

    Oh yeah, and fish.

Mexican is my weakness. It's killing me not to eat Mexican. Also eating less never works for me. I'm a pig, when I sit down I like to eat especially if I'm hungry  I will search the recipes and try to mix it up. I will be ordering a wok, thanks for the tips guys

Is that for the spider? So I would have to buy a wok also, or am I lost...lol ?

Food is fuel. What you do with the machine after you fill 'er up is very important. What, when, how much and how often you eat is all the food side.

There is a forum for this. You might be interested in this link

    But what about fish?
  • Not eating mexican?! Depends on your definition of mexican. Mexican does NOT mean "drowned in cheese". That's just the American definition of Mexican food.

Check out the recipes on Rick Bayless's website.
    http://www.rickbayless.com/recipes/

Here are some of his recipes (and a few other healthy mexican dishes, but non-Bayless) that I've made:
    Sopa Azteca (tortilla soup)
    sopa.jpg

    Guacamole
    IMG_4697.jpg

    Grilled chicken with red mole
    IMG_3783.jpg

    In this photo:
grilled achiote-marinated skirt-steak tacos with fresh corn salsa
    watermelon and jicama salad
    shrimp ceviche
guacamole and baked flour tortilla chips
    Candidate8.jpg

These are all healthy options and the ONLY one that was at all difficult was the mole sauce.

Tonight I'll be using leftover pulled pork and grilled chicken to make enchiladas, using a recipe from Rick's website (ok, THAT one will be drowned in cheese  ).
  • Oh phew, thanks for reminding me, Fidel. I almost forgot!

Fish is a good option too! B)

Mark 7 weeks ago I had a stroke at 240. Dr said I had to be at 180 asap (by the end of the year at most). After I hit the 180 he would tell me what the weight would be.Working to 25 BMI.
My stroke Dr. introduced me to livestrong.com and the app for the iPhone for livestrong.com.
I am eating now what I would drop for a meal 2 months ago. This morning at 214 diet is working for the first time in my life. This livestrong is real good.
Do lots of food (just much smaller amounts) on the eggs.
    Best to luck to you.
Salado TX & 30A  FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Just given a Mini to add to the herd.

  • Skin-on chicken (the typical spatchcocked method) isn't exactly diet food. Lean protein is your friend, and veggies are even better. Think roasted zucchini/squash, roasted tomatoes (topped w/garlicky bread crumbs), sweet potatoes, asparagus, peppers, carrots, etc. Use your Egg like an oven, why not use it to bake some whole-grain breads. Skip the oil-based marinades (step away from the italian dressing). Try a skinless spatchcock rubbed with a little bit of oil, garlic, & smoked paprika/pimenton, or marinate it in 0% fat all-natural yogurt w/some tandoori paste--both will deliver LOTS of flavor without beaucoup fat calories.

First of all you don't need to do the marinades. They are a lot of extra calories, fat and sodium. And with an egg you get plenty of flavor without them. My husband and I are on a forever diet. We eat alot of fish, grilled vegies and "gaba" rice. Gaba is a germinated brown rice with a greater amount of amino acid. It has many health benefits. It is made by soaking the brown rice in water for an extended period of time before cooking it. I actually have a rice cooker that has a "Gaba" setting on it. It works great to give a feeling of fullness so consequently you eat less.
    Hope this helps. :)

Mickey, hope things are well with you now and you've recovered. I've been through all this and to me it's mostly mental and until I can decide to do it it will be hard. 17yrs ago I was a 2 1/2 - 3 pack smoker and one day I was smoking instead of holding my baby girl, I threw them away and never went back. So I do have will power when it clicks. I will use the egg to help me get back on track and all the great recipes on here, but most of all, all the great help and advice from you guys....Thanks again to all you guys on here

I dropped about 50 lbs from Oct of 08 to present. Lots of seafood. I still need to lose more. But my eating habits have changed the last 3 weeks.

I don't have the time to invest in marathon training so I have been in the gym 30-45 min three days a week, strength training. If you have the time and desire for a marathon it is no doubt a great workout. The important thing to remember is, you can't do it on diet alone. Even if you can now because you're young, you won't be able to forever. Losing weight by restricting calories alone will shed pounds but pounds of what? You may succeed in losing lean muscle right along with fat and when you rebound after the diet is done you will have even less muscle to burn fat.

At 61 it finally made sense to exercise as a part of a lifestyle change along with watching what I eat. Build muscle to burn fat don't just regulate what you put in your mouth. I am amazed and marvel that we have bodies that will repair themselves even into old age.

Active life is better than just living in front of the tube watching McDonald's ads wishing you could lose weight and eating another low fat cookie.

Eating fat doesn't make you fat. Butter doesn't make you fat. Eating skin on chicken and italian dressing doesn't make you fat. Only eating excess calories makes you fat. Excess calories is consuming more calories than it takes to maintain your current weight. If you exercise more, specifically strength training and cardio, you will build muscles and burn fat. Ironically, you may not lose a lot of weight But the weight you have will be distributed on your body differently and you will drastically change your fat percentage. I haven't lost a ton of weight and I am not even interested with what the scale says. There is a delicious freedom in that. But clothes fit differently. I know that when I have built muscle that is an efficient fat burning machine the fat will fall off. How's that for a new perspective?

There you go speaking in 'tongues' again. Took me years to figure out how much rum is in a liter. The guy at the liquor store set me straight though. He said they put more rum in a liter bottle than the bourbon and vodka people do. So I made rum my number one choice.

Marinating in plain non-fat yogurt with some spices or herbs is one of my favorite tricks. Works wonders.
