So- short of Hypnosis- how do I convince the Wife (and to some extent MYSELF) to drop this kinda cash on a cooker?
I've seen, tasted food from, and coveted the BGE. Even bought the Chimenea after have 5 steel ones rust away over the years...but $900 for a cooker?-OUCH I take her by the BGE Dealer to get pool supplies..they were baking cookies on it-which raised her brow a bit in amazement...but still THAT'S A LOT OF GREEN! lol
Help me build the case !!!!!

Look at the life cycle cost. Example: my last 2 charcoal cookers lasted a combined 6-7 years and I paid around $700 bucks each for them. They both became rust buckets and were virtually unuseable when I got rid of them. Additionally, neither was anywhere near as versatile as the Egg. The Egg uses less lump and I rarely even use the range/ oven any more so some savings there as well over the life span of an Egg, which from everything I've learned is quite a long time.

I had a hard time shelling out the $700 for my first Egg and now I have 4 of them at home and have given 2 more to my son in-laws. Hang around here awhile and you'll be convinced. -RP

you can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it
  • Compare vs. the cost of buying a quality smoker, a brick oven, and replacing your grill every 10 years.

If you DO have another smoker, make HER get up in the middle of the night to load in more fuel every couple hours. I slept like a baby a couple weeks ago, when I last made pulled pork.

Or probably the best idea: get your dealer to roast a chicken. Honestly, roasted chicken ought to be a standard BGE dealer's deal-closer. Got a prospective customer on the fence? Make spatchcock.

Simply put, the food you will be able to make will be better than you could imagine. Really!

That's where you will save the money. My family used to get carry out 'Q from the best pit around at least 2 times a month. Within 2 months of owning the Egg, we stopped going there. Within a year, we saved at least $350, probably more. Going out to eat now is often disappointing because so little tastes better than what I can make at home.

Definately look at operating cost over a period of years as compared to other grills/smokers. I have had my Large for a little over 2 years, and it is just getting broken in. Had I bought a cheap gasser I would be looking at replacements. Had I bought an expensive gasser I would have spent roughly the same amount anyway and eaten food of less quality.
  • The Green Egg dose it all, sear, grill, roast, bake, smoke you can't beat it

Look at the money you save by not using your stove. My stove might be used one maybe two times a week. what every you cook on the stove you can cook on your egg and it will turn out better. Look for a eggfest near you and you can get one for less.

It was the reverse for us :) I had to convince hubby LOL went with the ask forgiveness rather than permission route......and have not looked back once! it is a life style change... really if you use it like some of us do. that is our oven, grill, smoker, stove top even. we have a few eggs now and love everyone one of them. eating out??? hardly at all! the food is better at home. plus you get the forum :)but do the post of your best cooks LOL you will be very hungry to say the least.... and this does not even touch on the people you add to your lives... but it is hard to sell that part as it sounds a little weird to say the least. but those that are here know it is a family :)

Last grill/smoker you will ever need. Do the math on 30 years of cooking.

  • Thanks everyone-you have sold me on it - that's 1/2 of the Team down !! I will make sure my Honey gets a taste of BGE cooking...I think that may be the deal closer!
That and me cooking more :)

    thanks again all!

Yes it is a lot of green but it is worth it, I have dropped a lot of cash over the years to find the perfect grill. I finally find it with the egg. I will never go back. I have two now. I gave away my other grills including a Teager. I am so happy now. I grill all the time and everyone says it is the best grill and food they ever tasted. I will always have a egg. Should have bought one years ago.

I'm with gdenby on this! Moreso, it's not just que that you will save on. Think in terms of steak dinners, wokked food, pizzas, burgers, stews and chilis and loads more. Can add up. I will guarantee that once you have an egg and a little time nothing in restaurants will be to your liking. Except french fries maybe.

Well, you might try telling her that she will never have to cook again. Unless of course you let her near it.
