How much space do I need for a large or medium egg

I'm wrestling with the age-old philosophical question: Large or medium egg? :( Two people, small patio, too many cookers already.

One piece of information I haven't found is how much space you need (diameter) for the eggs in their little nests with the lid open and with the lid closed. I'd like to put mine in a corner I have, and need to know how much room I need for it, and how much more room I'd need to open the top. I'm sure eggs need "elbow" room?

Many thanks! Forgive my egg-norance. I'm new!

    Welcome to the madness! :)

I don't have a medium, but my large is 22" wide. I have it against a wall (not in a corner) and with enough clearance for the dome to open (with DFMT in place), the front bits are about 32" from the wall. Hope this helps.

Oh, and you might as well get rid of the other cookers. Once you get an egg, you'll find that you'll use the others only for storing egg accessories anyway. :)

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Yes, you won't need the other cookers. My Weber is going off the deck and I'm moving the lg. on to join the med. and the mini. Food just doesn't taste good cooked any other way.
  • I agree with sharhamm and Carolina Q... I have a gas grill still, but I can setup the egg faster and the food taste better.

Due to a very good offer made by my dealer, I have 2 mediums. When the family is over, or we have guests, a single medium is a little small. For 2 - 4, it will cook plenty.

The approximate size is 17" wide, and 20" deep. The lid open pretty much fits in the same area. The nest is perhaps 18" square at the bottom. I don't have the side wings, just a wooden bench. Works O.K. for laying down plates, and such.
  • Well thanks, that's helpful. Right now, I'm leaning to the medium because I want something that is easy and not too big for two people and a few leftovers. I know that the food cooked in a Le Creuset pot is always better when the pot is almost full, so I'm thinking that three poor little burgers or one pork butt or puny chicken would be not an ordeal on a medium.

My offset smoker is big, the Weber Smokey Mountain is big, the Kettle requires a lot of messing and cleaning and keeping it from blowing over, and all are fun to cook on, but I need something low-maintenance for smaller and quicker cooks--something I don't feel compelled to load up because of the time, effort, and money investment to fire it up! Then you have to either invite the neighborhood over or freeze it all. LOL!!

I just couldn't figure out how much room 'ya REALLY need for an 18-inch grill or a 15-inch one!!!!!

    THANKS!
  • Thank you SO much! Sounds like the medium if a good cooker from your experience! How many chickens can you REALLY do at once?

You will never use the WSM or Kettle again. Seriously. I have a kettle that hasn't been used since I got the egg. You might use the offset... but I doubt it. :)

Sell 'em all and buy a Large. More accessories available for that size too. If you search the forum for all of the "what size should I buy" threads, and it seems there's a new such thread every couple of days, you will see that the Large is by far the most widely recommended.

I have a Large and a Mini - and most of my cooks are for one.

Hmmm, don't really know how many chickens I could do at once on a medium. I've never needed to do more than 2. Did do a 10 lb goose for Christmas. I suppose that with a dual level set up, maybe four chix cut up.
