Buying second BGE

I have the XL BGE and love it ! Since I cook mostly for my wife and myself I want to buy a second smaller egg. What combination will work the best ? Any thoughts ? I will still use my XL for larger low and slow cooks. yesterday I smoked four loins which had been cured for Canadian Bacon. I will slice and package them today and give most of the bacon away to friends. Can't eat all I cook, just love to cook and bake.

I started with a large in '02, just 2 adults and small dinner parties. '06 got a small and have no regrets. Use the small most of the time. Now have a second large, Imperial Kamado, I bought last fall for TEN BUCKS and refinished it. Last month my lady friend won a medium at the Sunshine State Fest. Am now looking for a house with a larger outdoor cooking area. just kidding.

For my wife and I, a mini became the go to egg. We use the mini almost daily. It starts up fast and easy. So easy that my wife is the one that cooks on the mini...a couple handful of lump, starter stick in the middle, and control the temp via the lower damper. I could come home from work and the meal is already cooking.
The large is still initimidating for her; more of a learning curve than the mini. -
I believe you should consider getting a medium BGE. It can cook 2 butts for 16+ hrs, a whole packer cut brisket, etc. all the while using little lump. I love my medium and believe it is one of the most unappreciated eggs there is.

That's eggciting!..Well, lets think about this. You got the big Daddy Egg, love to cook and bake, just the two of you most of the time, will use the XL for smokin BBQ, need to step down in size for the day to day cookin....hummmmmm. I'm gonna recommend the medium egg.
The medium has plenty of room for a lot of different cooks and it is a great pizza hearth oven with plate setter and pizza stone combo. Some of the best pizza and breads that I have seen came off the medium egg. :woohoo: Next to the XL the medium looks small but you will be able to cook anything extremely well for the two of you AND for two more guests when they come over to visit and enjoy your cookin and baking.
Good luck, have fun! -
I agree, the medium has some tuff compitition... the small is a great little egg and the large is the classic. And the mini is cute, cute, cute.
To tell the truth, the medium is an ideal egg for all around use when cookin for two and has the capability to crank out more food if the need arises. Remember Rick's Tropical Delight?, he cooked all his outrageously fantastic food including mouth watering breads and pizza on 'Martha' his faithful medium. Amazing. :cheer: -
I have 2 XL's for my huge parties and I sell pulled pork ect. It looks like I will need a medium too :woohoo: :woohoo:  :woohoo:

I have the large medium combo and I love my medium. The medium catches a lot of smack around here but it's an all around great egg. I would say the XL medium combo would probably be even better than a large medium combo. Good Luck.

I vote for a Small. Light enough to pick up and carry. Easily fits in passenger car seat. Big enough for fairly big pieces of meat, etc.

XL and medium is a nice combo, IMHO. :woohoo:

I own a L, M, S, & Mini. My go to egg for 60% of my cooks is my beloved small! BTW there's just two of us.Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time!

I have a large and small for the two of us. The combo works great when cooking a small meal.

I have never cooked with an XL so I am not sure what you are dealing with as far as size other than big.
Two of us here and we have the L,M,S,M.
We use the large and mini the most. Love the mini, it cooks a bit different in that the lump is closer to the cook level. Keeping that in mind and a mini woo the mini is a great egg.
I have only used the small 4 times so I need to use it some more. However, I am thinking of selling the medium and or small. Maybe pick up a second large or XL.

I bought a small a year ago, and I really like it. Put a deposit down on a large today so I will soon be a two egg household! Will pick it up after the OKC Eggfest next week!"Bacon tastes gooood, pork chops taste gooood." - Vincent Vega, Pulp Fiction
Small and Large BGE in Oklahoma City. -
I was in your exact situation, I had an XL for just me and the wife. I wanted something smaller for times when I was just grilling steaks. I ended up getting a Large. The price wasn't that much more from the Med plus it seems that everything is optimized for the Large. I love both my eggs, they have their own purposes.
