I finally bought my first bge!! What should I cook first to ensure that this was a good purchase to my husband??? Any suggestions how to wow a beginner egger?

Comments

  • I'd go for the pulled pork.
  • Welcome
My first cook was "beer can" chicken. First cook should be simple; practice for temp control and building a fire.

Just do a simple burger using the instructions in the green book that came with the egg. Simple but great compared to any other burger I've tried.
  • Melissa,
    First off, congratulations and welcome!
I would suggest your first cook should be something you are comfortable with and something hubby likes.
Thay way, you'll learn a bit about how the Egg works and wow him all at the same time! ;)

Spatchcock Chicken seems to be a standard answer to the "first cook" question, but I usually suggest a pork loin roast. Fatty's are awesome too.
  • How about pork tenderloin. Marinate it, or put a rub on it and egg it direct at 375 dome, pull at 140 degrees.
    Quick and easy.

  • A tad expensive, but sure to blow him away. Plus, it's foolproof if you follow this video.

    I'm talking Prime Rib. B)

something inexpensive like the spatchcock or the pork loin mentioned, maybe even something like meatloaf. there is a small learning curve, especially if youve never cooked on lump, things like temp control, how soon to put the meat on the grill after lighting, too smokey etc. pick a cook and start a post about how to go about it

Statchcocked Chicken would be my choice for the first meal. It's simple and easy, and since chicken is on most everyone's menu it will give you a chance to taste the difference in a gasser or stove.

Here's the link if you don't already know how.

Remember to tell us how it went and take pictures if you can. We love pictures.

Congratulations and welcome to the forum.

Make sure you watch the video, read the manual and check the calibration on your thermometer.

There are a lot of easy cooks that will come out very well.

Make sure you cook the food to temperature not under or over cooked and the egg will always give you great results.

Looks like Spatchcocked chicken is suggestion. Spactchcocked is simply a whole chicken with the backbone cut out, which is a butterflied chicken.

350° dome direct raised. I did a short skin down cook then flipped as you see below. No real need to cook both sides as I was just playing around with this cook. Cook until the bird is 165°.

Brats, hot dogs, burgers, fatties, chicken pieces are all very easy cooks. Heck, you will find most everything is easy to cook on the egg.

Another easy cook as mentioned above is Prime rib.

or something as simple as grilled tuna melt.

Enjoy and let us know what you decided and how your husband like the cook.

    Spatchcock Chicken is great.

Temp control is easy after first couple of cooks.

Congrats on newest family member, joining the forum, and love to see posted pics.

Thanks for all of the suggestion and great pics too!

I decided to try steaks. I started out great, searing on both sides at 600 degrees. Looking great, until, I forgot to "burp" the grill. Needless to say, I now have bangs. I singed the front of my hair and slightly burned my knuckles. Good news though, my beuatician recently quit and I was overdue for a haircut!!!!

Great cook, delicious steak. Tomorrow I will be doing a whole chicken!!
