Plate Sitter Question

GregC
Posts: 91
At the risk of sounding dumb :woohoo: here's my question....I have a Large BGE and have a plate sitter. I've noticed whenever I use it it takes longer for the temp to get to where I'm wanting it. Is that due to the plate sitter absorbing the heat?
Thanks
Greg
Thanks
Greg

You are heating more ceramic. Maybe try getting the temp to where you want it before adding the Plate Setter. It will lower the temp for a short while before a quick rebound.

YES. The use of the plate setter is to diffuse the heat. It acts as a heat barrier for some types of cooks, usually called indirect and yes it has to warm up therefore the longer time to get to your desired temp

Thanks for the help, learning to use my BGE is more fun that what I thought it would be.

On my last rib cook, I preheated the plate setter in the conventional oven from a cold start to 250* until the preheated beep came from the oven. I moved the warm plate setter to the Egg which was was stabilized at 250*, and you guessed it, no drop in dome temp when I put it in, so ready to cook in shorter time. Works for me, gonna do it again next indirect cook.

One of the nice things many of us have found is that the kitchen no longer has to get hot with the oven NOT being used as most of the cooking is done outside. Maybe that is a great idea in the winter but what about the summer months??

True there. Never thought about y'all down there in the hot southern states. It gets hot here but not Florida hot. Wait, Florida's not considered a "southern" state is it?I like my butt rubbed and my pork pulled.

For many of us we are a northern part of Florida when you use the Conch Republic as the base.

That is not necessary. The Egg has sort of a "memory". Putting a cool p setter in a stabilized egg will result in only a temporary change of temp as long as the vent and DFMT settings arent changed.

Thanks for all the great answers and advice, this forum is great.
