Kitchen Aid Mixer Repair (lots o picks)
i did get alot of advice from people when i had to take the ka apart the second time. i had put the thing back together the first time i sheared two gears and ended up with gear shavings in the grease. well that ment all the grease had to get cleaned up. i was surprised at how many people actually told me to use gasoline  . i ended up using easy off oven cleaner. it is food safe
and worked like a charm!!!so here are the tools you will need to do it all

phillips head screw driver, and external snap ring pliers. i did not take pictures of all the paper towels, cotton balls, and q-tips i used to get all the grease out of the mixer.
but i did undo the motor and switch board to make sure i got all of it

here it is for the first part i put back together

here are all the parts

#1 Front Bearig
#2 Thrust Bearing
#3 Worm Gear
#4 Rear Bearing
#5 Worm Follower Gear
#6 Retaining Pin
#7 Retaining Clip
#8 Bevel Gear
#9 Attachment hub bevel gear
#10 Transmition Housing
here is a picture of how to start

here is the picture from when i put the retaining pin in

the bevel gear goes on top of the worm follower gear. there is a spot machined out to accomodate the pin

it just slides on

the retaining clip goes on top using the pliers

the attachment gear slides into the transmition housing

then goes on top

i did that one to make sure it fit on right.. i forgot the most expensive part of this the gear grease. it is food grade which made it more $$$. they also sent me enough to grease 10 mixers :S
but getting all that grease in there is a issue. this was the second time, so i got smart, and applied some ABT knowledge..

yep used a ziplock bag and cut a hole in the corner and piped it in.. was alot easier than the first time..
another grease shot

i put the housing on then ran it for a few took the transmition housing off and added more grease.. then put the housing back on

then the outer cover

it was not a hard project but one that needed to be done i started out buying the worm follower gear, transmition housing, and the grease the first time.. ended up replacing everything except for the worm gear. which is what sparky did to his. but i was not lucky enough. the people at the link i provided were really nice and helpful to me in all my ordering..
i hope i never have to do this again but after 6 years of me using it and the wife using it every week some maitnence should be done. i read somewhere that you are supposed to replace the grease every year as maitnence. but i did not. and i ended up spending about $100 on 4 orders that included the shipping of 4 diffrent orders. so take my advice and order everything you think you need the first time :pinch:
like i said i hope i do not have to do this again but i did want the pictures to be here for any future eggers who go through this......
happy eggin

So Terry you never did say,,, does it work now?
 Nice job, if you have a spare week I have an outdrive I'm having a problem with
-
Dang. Pretty adventurous there dude.
I'm pretty good mechanically, but I would have probably finished reassembly, then found a snap ring I forgot to put on.
I know you have the satisfaction of firing that baby up and realizing you fixed it yourself, BUT... What was your total time spent?
Ours is making some funny noises.
Cheers bro

Thanks for the excellent post!

proabably 10 hours. not counting thinking :S
but i did take it apart more than twice i think i took it apart and reassembled 6 or 8 times total. there are only 13 screws holdong it all together. they were all easy excepe fot the one holding the band. the one that has all the speeds and kitchen aid. it is the one little screw you can see without taking anything apart. it goes through that one hole on the band twice and screws int9o the machine. it is almost 1/4 inch long and the biggest pain. the rest was pretty simple i did get it back together once and told the wif i had a extra screw. i opened it up and it was the ground screw for the motor...
if yours is making noises it is pretty simple mine made noises for a couple years after i made a wheat dough that i did not read the directions fully. then i made some portuguese sweet bread that finally got it. it would go to a point then stop i knew i was in trouble but the $100 +/- was better than going and spending another $500 i spent on the thing originally..happy eggin

Great job. Don't you just love the feeling of repairing something. It might have cost a little more to do but the experience and knowledge you gain is worth it in my book.

Bente, awesome overhaul there!
You must be a keeper. Next thing you know, you'll have a Hobart with all of your bread making!
If you ever need anything from the KitchenAid factory or shop, just let me know. I'm up in Greenville, OH for meetings at their local hospital at least once a month. The KitchenAid shop is just a hop, skip, and a jump away. I walk over there and browse on occasion. -
thanks for the offer!! i thought about you when i was doing this, the grease came from dayton.
