AVOCADO wood for smoking ... results
Morro Bay Rich
Posts: 2,227
Awhile back I asked if anyone had tried avocado wood for smoking. Apparently no one had as I got no responses and searches in the Internet for information were futile.
Well, I have tried it now. Knowing that chicken takes up smoke flavor to a greater extent than anything I am aware of I cooked unseasoned chicken breasts using 3 small chunks of seasoned avocado wood. The result was a pleasant, mild smoke flavor akin to orange. Luckily we are surrounded by avocado groves and they sell the wood as firewood for campers. There is so much of the stuff here, anyone interested in smoking an elephant or two?

Fishlessman,
That is the most complete list I have seen. Thanks for sending it.
Only problem I can see selling it is I would get it in 12" lengths, have to cut it (thus requiring me to buy a chop saw), then split it into chunks with a hand ax. Suspect that under these conditions it would take seven years to come close to breaking even. :( -
ive probably googled smoking woods a hundred times and avacodo smoking wood is the first time ive ever seen that chart pop upfukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

Sorry I didn't see your earlier request. As I understand it, in Spain, they use avocado and orange wood for fires when making paella, so it would make sense that you could smoke with it....The Naked Whiz

When I was growing up in San Diego County, avocado wood was so plentiful you could get cords of it for next to nothing. We used in our fire place because it was so cheap. Of course, I was not concerned at the time about using it as a smoke wood, but I do remember that it had a pleasant light smoke smell.
Now, I would have to pay about $30 for a 40lb bag of avocado chunks. It is outrageous. Hmm, the older I get the more I sound like my dad. At least I am not so old that I remember when Pepsi was a nickle.
Glad to hear you made a nice new discovery. -
Hey....I remember when it was a dime!!! I'm in trouble!

Rich:
That sounds like an interesting smoke-wood!! I’m always into trying something a bit “out there”. Glad you gave it a try and like it.
Next time I get out your way I’ll have to see if my cuz (or you??) can score some for me to get back home with me.
I hope getting out “something” isn’t anything like trying to get anything into your state (with apples and oranges in my cooler), because that was tough on me!
Thanks for the report!! -
That went in the wrong spot...Oh Well...
Hope you all follow the drif. -
Anyone tried avocado wood for beef steaks? I managed to score some free avocado wood recently and am curious about smoking with it.
