What size egg for 2 people?
Brickman
Posts: 6
I am about to take the plunge and purchase my first egg. I would like to know what egg you would recommend for mainly cooking for 2 people. I was leaning towards a small since I read some posts that a large can use a lot of charcoal unless you are cooking for a crowd. I currently have 2 WSM's and a Weber 22 1/2 platinum so I am not real worried about space issues if I need to cook alot. I would like to get an egg and not break the bank in the process. TIA.[p]Mark

LARGE!!!

Brickman,[p]I would say get a large egg. I cook on mine almost everyday, my wife and I enjoy the large egg because it is very flexible you can cook small amounts of food or large amounts. I don't think the charcoal is an issue the amount of charcoal being used can't be that much, plus lump charcoal last a long time.

Brickman, I have large, and small, and the small kicks in for me when there is only two. Get both if you do any group cooks.

Brickman,[p]I really like baking in the large. You can bake in the small, too, but it's hindered by the absence of a plate setter (and you can't bake as much).[p]Ken
-
Brickman,[p]I agree, large is the way to go. Very flexible, you can cook one steak or several large chickens!
-
Brickman,
dont think you can egg two people on any bge even the xxl:)[p]if your gonna have just one the get the large, charcoal is cheap and when done cooking you can save the rest.
the small is just that SMALL. the capacity isnt enough for visitors or if you are doing any quantity, or in need of just surface area.
I find the large too small on ocassion, like doing a low and slow with suppertime approaching and the low and slow wont be finnished till tommorow, thats where a second grill even a small will come in handy. I just got another large for that.
-
Brickman,[p]Go for the small or the medium.
The large is too much for 2 people.
In about a month, everyone will be telling you to get the XL ;-)
-
jwitheld,[p]If the small is too small, then for 2 people the Medium is the way to go, not the Large.

Tony,
My wife and I have a large and a small. No way would we settle for just the small or even a medium. Even with just two people, the large is best for making jerky and pizza, for example. What about Thanksgiving? Will he never cook a decent sized turkey for a big meal? And the gentleman has a 22inch Weber and 2 WSMs???? He isn't using those 3 cookers for just 2 people. I find it hard to imagine that he truly will only be using the Egg just to cook a couple of steaks or chicken breasts. No, I think he will find that the large is really the best choice, especially once he quits using those other cookers.

Just came from lunch with some other Eggheads and we discussed this very thing. We decided, that with the ease of starting and shuting down,if you only gonna have one it must be a large. You can not and will not only be cooking for 2 people once you get to eggin. You will want others to share your great results.Good Eggin To You!!!

Brickman,[p]I cook for the wife, a 4 year old, and 1 year old, and we have a medium. Never really had a problem. Last week, I was able to cook thirteen drumsticks (my daughter's favorite) and six large ears of corn at the same time using the extra grid. Admittedly, it was a little tight, but it worked fabulously.[p]If you do plan on cooking for large groups, I can see the large, but cooking for two (and now 3 1/2 to 4 with the kids), I've never had a problem with the medium.
-
The Naked Whiz,[p]With my Medium I've made (on seperate occasions) 14lbs of boston butt, a 12 lb turkey, 6 racks of ribs, and (since they cook fast) too many burgers to count -- That's a LOT of food for two people.[p]Since price was a factor in the original question, the large may not be an option (they wanted a small, remember, so it might be worth considering the xtra cost for a medium, and if not, the the small would work for 2 people)[p]When the XL is available, will the Large be large enough?
-
Brickman,
I have a large and a small and 1 wife, 1 dog, 1 cat, and several fish. So, I guess I'm cooking for 2 and a half if you count the dog. Anyway, I truly recommend the large. First off, you have 3 cookers already, so why do have 3 cookers if you only cook for 2 people? Whatever it is you are cooking on those three cookers, you will probably now be cooking on your Egg. Get a large. Also, once you get an Egg and read the forum, you will want to start trying all sorts of neat stuff. Like pizza. I cook 14" pizzas on a 16 inch stone. Get a large. If you are going to try jerky, you will find that jerky goes really fast so you need to make a bunch. Get a large. You may find you want to do a large Turkey for Thanksgiving or Christmas. Get a large. You might find someone asks you to do pulled pork for a crowd. My wife signed me up to cook pulled pork for a women's shelter and I did four butts to feed them. Get a large. Did I mention, get a large? LOL! [p]As for using a lot of charcoal, with the Egg, when you are done cooking, you can close the vents and the fire will go out. You will only use as much charcoal as is necessary to cook your food. Get a large.[p]The Naked "Get A Large" Whiz

Tony,
Well, before there was a mini, was the small small enough? LOL! I'm not dissing the medium, but if you can afford the large, I think you should go for it. If not, then by all means the medium will make you happier than before you got your egg. [p]TNW

I live alone and I'm happy with my large.
-
The Naked Whiz,[p]Well, since the question was "I would like to get an egg and not break the bank in the process" and "cook for 2 people", then the large is not a good recomendation.[p]I've yet to have large BGE envy ...and if I ever do, I'll get the XL ;-)[p]Tony
-
Brickman,[p]Have you gone to a dealer yet? If not, look for a dealer in your area and take a look at the BGE lineup in person.[p]"Medium, without regrets", Tony
-
Thanks for all of the help. Originally I was leading towards a large. I spoke with Ray Lampe and he showed me the 2 larges that he competes with. Now I am just trying to justify to myself spending the $700. The Colorado dealer wants $659 without taxes. I know that I will use a large but I thought the samll would be quite a bit cheaper. After seeing the price of a small I just might wait and save some more money for the large. The Naked Wiz was right and I sometimes do cook for a large crowd (150 people last weekend) but this is going in a table in my backyard is is not going anywhere once it is in there. Thanks for all the help. Now all I need to do is talk the wife into going to Eggfest next year so I can pick up a used BGE.[p]Mark
-
Brickman,[p]If you're gonna cook for 150 you might want to wait a few weeks and get the XL (...be the first one on your block!)
-
Tony,
Nope, I think he'll need a match pair of XLs! Dang![p]TNW
The Naked Whiz -
Brickman,
Or you could talk her into Eggtoberfest in October where you should be able to also buy a special price used egg.

The Naked Whiz,[p]From 2 people to 150 -- How did that happen ;-)
-
Tony,[p]That kind of thing always seems to happen when you fire up an egg.[p]RE
-
Tony,
Is he talkin' people or rabbits? !!![p]TNW

Brickman, large, then a small, then you'll be wondering after a while why you let those other sit around and take up space...I mean you'll finally start to think "it's not like their all that nice to just look at, and I really could use that space, why not give em away or something". That's what I did and haven't regreted it.
-
Brickman,[p]With an XL you can cook 1 small person max. I recommend putting the second person in the freezer for a later cook.[p](A little cannibal humor on a Friday afternoon)

It was for my little brother's graduation party. Started out that my parents were going to get it catered. Next thing I know I'm cooking 120 lbs of brisket and pork butt. I once had aspirations of trying to do some BBQ catering on the side. Made me change my mind in a hurry. I think I will stick to doing it just for fun and not let the money side of it screw everything up. Of coures a couple of good catering gigs and I could pay for and BGE... [p]Mark
-
Whiz, So what are you saying?
-
Tony,[p]I think the bottom line is if you can only have one, get the biggest you can convince yourself you can afford. If you can have multiple Eggs, a second smaller version is nice since then you can use it to conserve charcoal, sear closer to the coals, etc, when you're cooking for a smaller audience.[p]Multiple cookers are definitely nice since then you can do multiple food items at the same time at different temps and such.[p]I wouldn't throw away the Webers either, though, since they could also provide the extra capacity or the differnt temp/environments one might want when cooking for crowds.[p]All that said, the biggest Egg I have is a Small, and I would love to have a Medium! Next one I get will probably be an XL, though...[p]Q on,
Cornfed
