Apple Juice vs Apple Juice

A few years ago I ran across an article about the contents of containers of various juices. The article made it quite clear that you don't always get what you think you're getting.

The reason is what's in the "juice." If you read the label on say an apple juice container it will say something like, "Apple Juice" followed by some additional writing that says, "100% Juice." But when you look at the contents section it doesn't say "100% Apple Juice."

They reported that there were other types of 'juices' in the bottle along with the apple juice. I suppose that means they are using cheaper juice as some sort of filler but selling it as apple juice. These may be little more than flavored water. See:

http://www.askdrsears.com/html/4/T043200.asp

There is also considerable argument as to what is 'apple juice' vs what is 'apple cider.' They appear to be the same.

So when I'm in the juice section I look for bottles that say "100% Apple Juice." And although it is a bit more expensive it does taste better.

I know lots of Eggheads use apple juice either in their marinade or for spritzing or for mixing in with sauce. Even Myron Mixon claims to use it.

So do any of you use the real stuff or do you use the cheaper version?

Do you notice a difference?

Great question. I'm going to buy some for tomorrow for spritzing, what should I use and is there a ratio of juice and water or do I use something other than water with it?

that stuff called juice in the stores doesnt turn hard like the stuff we get here  there has to be a difference. apple cider is thicker and not transparent like juice to and its best if left in the back of the fridge a week or two til the bottle starts to puff up

  • I believe one big difference between apple juice and apple cider is pasturization. Pasturized apple juice no longer contains the bacteria that will allow fermentation. Therefore, apple juice does not turn "hard."

You do have to check the label if you want 100% apple juice. Much of the time, white grape juice is added to apple or other types of juice as a sweetener since white grape juice is sweeter than apple juice. It probably also provides consistent flavor. It may also be cheeper so it is good for filler. White grape juice is not bad, it just is not apple.

funny you brought this up, but for the last 6 weeks I have been on an apple juice jag for some reason. Not for breakfast and not as a health kick - I just enjoy the taste and consume 1 ice cold bottle (10 oz) a day. My juice of choice is Minute Maid apple juice. The label clearly says it Contains pure filtered water, concentrated apple juice, less than 0.5% of: vitamin C, calcium citrate, potassium phosphate. I think I'm getting the real thing...

I'm not sure the apple juice adds flavor to the meal, especially if it's not the 100% apple juice type. I know a few who mix apple juice and apple cider vinegar for spritzing. I'm pretty sure the vinegar flavor will be more pronounced.

You might just start off light and move up to see which is better.

I've used white grape juice for years as a base for my injection marinade. Seems to work well.

I chose my apple juice as careful as I chose my Rum.
Sipping Zaya is nice. From my best friend that gave me that bottle.

Haven't tried a juicer. Can't say I even know someone who has one.

Zaya is two shelves higher up than my rum. I have to mix mine with coke to make it palatable.

But I'm good with that as long as I'm not flying or shoot'n arrows.

A few years ago we started pressing our own and freezing it. I freeze some of it in the small plastic jars made for freezing jam. It holds about a cup. I use those for cooking.

If I run out of drinking apple juice, I buy organic. There's a lot less choices in the organic apple juice section than the nonorganic. I try to buy mostly organic and one benefit is it takes away all the choices. I'm not good at choices!

Just guessing but I think that organic or home-pressed apple juce would be better for marinades and spritzing too.

Hasn't been that long ago that all grown food was organic.
