Any experience with home intercom replacements?

We need to replace our NuTone intercom/music system which has bit the dust. The wiring is fine as are the 9 stations - it's just the main unit that died. I find that the NuTone guy wants to sell me more than I need, but another dealer seems to have a better unit. The product is called a dmc retrofit and the company (not the dealer) touts itself as being "the next generation replacement for M & S and NuTone 3, 4, and 6 wire systems." I'm leaning toward their main unit which appears powerful and includes a 6-disc CD changer. It's not an arm and a leg purchase, but I hate throwing away $1,300 if a dmc isn't any good. Thanks for your help and it's OK to take this product evaluation off the board and to email if you wish.

Ron, question is do you use it? I had one in my last house that was never used. -RP

    Randy,

As an intercom - no, never, but for radio and recorded music - yes - and a lot! I am deaf in one ear and have limited hearing in the other so fancy sound systems would be a waste. When we had our home built I had multiple large speakers placed so that we had level sound throughout. My other rationale for replacement is whenever we do sell our home we would have to replace it then so why not get it now and use it. And lastly by replacement I don't have all the drywall repairs to make and paint filling up the holes!

I would just replace it with another NuTone master station. Wiring is already correct and since it is not used so much except for radio is will last you until you move or die whichever comes first. You can get the NuTone with optional CD for 600.
This is the greatest signature EVAR!

Thank you for your insight. Since I posted this thread I've had two different expensive car repairs of $3k so the intercom got moved to a back burner, but after next week I'll be getting both companies out for firm estimates.
