Two Butts for Blacksburg
Options
NoVA Bill
Posts: 3,005
Need to make a butt (BBQ) run to Blacksburg on Saturday so started my fire about 8:30 this AM and got the 13 lbs of butts on the egg at 9:30AM. Tried to hold 230 grid using cherry chunks.
Pulled at 190 degrees, at 21:30 hrs or after 12 hours on the egg. They're in the butt box for an hour rest then I'll pull them then off to bed.
Note: Today was a windy day here in NoVA. Although the bottom vent was facing away from the wind I noticed as the speed of the wind picked up (running across the top of the DFMT) the temp would increase then retreat as the wind moderated... must be some venturi effect going on? Not a problem as the egg did an excellent job holding the Lo-n-Slo.

Hey Bill, Nice going there on your butt cook. I have been going through butt withdrawal so my turn is very soon. Have a great day! Tim

Hey Tim,
Thanks, it had been a while here also. -
I've got family in Blacksburg. Would you stop by my Uncle Curtis's place, and drop off a pound or so of that pulled pork? We'll make an egghead out of him in no time.

Hey Ben,
Nice thought butttttt I'll be moving pretty fast so I won't be able to make any detours. -
Do you think putting a "rain hat" on the egg when it's windy would help? When it's raining, I use an 8 inch chimney cap to cover the daisy and prevent water from entering the egg. This cap should also distrub the air flow over the daisy and reduce the wind speed and venturi effect. Just a thought.

They look great...the wind can be an issue even with your vent turned away from the wind, but sounds like all went well...

Bill,
I just figured out what the NoVA meant. I was thinking it meant new. Duh! What a maroon
Nice looking pork

Good thought but I'm uncertain of the impact?
Thanks! -
Thanks, it did indeed go well. It was just on very big burst of wind that drove the temp up +25 degrees when I was watch the ET-73.
