Gasket failure

I have a medium BGE and am going through gaskets a little too often. When I got the egg the gasket on it lasted about 14 months and hundreds of cooks. In the last year I have gone through 3 felt gaskets and this last one I just put on about a month ago and its leaking already from the back. I checked clearance and alignment of the top to the bottom half and it was fine. I cooked pizza on it last night and got the temp to about 600. Just got it going again to do an overnight pork butt and noticed smoke coming out from the rear around the gasket. I looked at it and the gasket is burned. What am I doing wrong? Is there a better more heat tolerant gasket for the egg that's not the cheapy felt one I've been replacing?

  • I'm a newbie too, but do a search on NOMEX and you will get your answer.

There is nothing wrong with a little smoke leaking from the gasket area. Some of the more heat tolerant gaskets are nomex, rutland and coltronics

Gaskets are covered under warranty if you are the original owner. Email BGE customer service and ask for the Nomex replacement (non-adhesive) gasket. Clean the surface with 91% alcohol ready good before installing the new gasket. Lately, I believe alot of good results have been with a Permatex Ultra Copper high temp silicon.

  • i second the above about nomex gaskets. I replaced mine with a nomex, and used 3M super77 adhesive. Dirst I scraped the heck out of it with a razor scraper and acetone.

the felt in my opinion is not a viable gasketting material. it should be nomex or rutland from the factory.

No, gaskets are not warranty items - just the first one if you complain to Atlanta. Otherwise gaskets are maintenance items at your own expense.

  • You are doing pretty good at 14 months. I have had my egg for a little over a month and use it ALOT and went thru 1 gasket already. I have replaced it with the wool kind and ordered a nomex with adhesive from freds music and bbq .com for 36 bucks. I have just written an email to BGE to see if they will send a free one.. Cant hurt...

My brother and I both use cotronics; seems to work great. I was unable to find a local dealer for it, but was able to buy it direct from the company - in a 50 ft (?) roll - so while I don't expect to have to replace it any time soon, I'll have it when needed.

True, but if this is the first complaint to the Mothership after replaceing at his own expense . . .
I would think Bruce would help him out. IMHO

sure - could be and I agree he should go for it - but I just wanted to address your blanket statement which implied that gaskets were covered by warranty, because they are not. Peace!

  • I have had my egg since December and have done countless cooks on it from low n slow to high heat searing. My gasket is shot already too. I mentioned it to my dealer when I was in picking up charcoal and he gave me one off the shelf and said he would warranty it for me. Really nice of him and I appreciated the good service. I haven't gotten around to replacing it yet as I've seen quite a few posts from others that have given up and cook without one with no leaking and no problems. I'm going to give it one more shot so we'll see I guess.

If it is felt replacement, I wouldn't get my hopes up too high. Whereas, if it is a Nomex, with a good cleaning, should work for a good long time.

Leggo My Eggo, I agree with loco_engr if that gasket is felt I would not apply it to the base and dome gasket surfaces I would apply some of it to the inside ring of the rain cap and call the mothership and ask for a replacement gasket for your egg. I did and left my cell number for the call back because Bruce will call you back but it may be the next day. Wish you well. Tim
