I am doing my first Pork butt over night friday and plan to smoke for about 15 hours. How much lump and wood should I put in there so I dont burn out? Thanks

I have read and have been told to fill it up to the fire ring. Larger pieces on the bottom and then medium pieces, then smaller on top. i did a butt this past weekend and still had plenty of lump left after about a 11 hour cook. The leftover lump you can use for later cooks.

cjm02ram,
Make sure the egg is free of ash. Fill it to the just below the top of the fire ring. Use large pieces at the bottom, medium over those and small on top. Light in at least three places.

Go to www.nakedwhiz.com
and read a detailed report on building a fire for low & slow cooks.
You will learn quite a lot. -
Fill 'er up! Why take a chance? The $2 of lump you could possibly save is not worth all the time, effort and meat wasted if your fire goes out hours too soon.
-
And remember to check after 8 - 10 hours to make sure the fire has not burnt straight down the middle, and left 3/4 of the lump stacked up along the sides. Less likely if you start in multiple places, but it can still happen.

fill up to the top of fire ring and cook away
