Hi All,

While out to Photobucket I had an alert from Norton's Internet Security 2010 that runs on my system. Sorry for the large image but I wanted it legable. Oops, It got resized by this system, let me work on a thumbnail to it. That might be better.

I have been in contact with Photobucket support and they were interested in all the information that I could provide them. They recommend running Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. It comes as a freeware version and a pay for full version. I don't know if it is redundant to Norton's so I have not gone that route yet. It is NOT an anti-virus program, it will NOT protect against everything.

Good luck,

Gator

  • How are the computers getting infected? Are they getting infected when they try to post an image to Photobucket, or does just clicking on a picture in this forum cause the infection?

I'm on a Mac, so I think I'm safe, but I'd like to know anyway. If a computer is getting infected by just clicking on the link, I'd sure want to ask the folks that use Photobucket to resist posting until this is resolved.

    Thanks.

if the virus "internet security 2010" gets in for a while, you wont be able to download and run malwarebytes, it will look like it downloaded and ran but it gets faked out by the virus. cant tell what you have as i cant read it.

i think thru the add that pops up while your clicking on download pictures, sometimes you go to download a pic and that add pops up at the same time and opens the add

  • So, clicking on a picture here would be harmless. Right?

I know that viruses can be embedded in .jpg files. Scary.

    Thanks.

Malware is one of the main programs Dell used in removing my trojan, just not sure which program they used.

    Hi Gary,

I got the alert from Norton's as soon as I rolled my mouse over the image I wanted the IMG code for. Mac's are great machines but I have no idea what they are vulnerable to.

That's a good question Gary, I wonder if doing anything on line is ever going to be safe again. We can only hope. If we all had Mac's these people would find more ways to attack them.

    Are you running internet explorer?

    Hi fishlessman

You are probably correct, there could be any number of triggers to activate these little darlings. By providing Photobucket support with all the info they requested we can only hope they can find a cure.

interesting name of Fake Antivirus Install Request. While it was an attempted intrusion was it in fact malicious or some company trying to sell you their product. Reason I ask is last Saturday Kim Kamando addressed that very issue as a sales tactic made to make you think you had a virus.

    Hi azbbguy

Yup, and that could be part of the problem. I don't know.

if you google photobucket and virus all sorts of stuff pops up, i think its more to do with running the mouse quickly over the add than with photobucket itself, but im not puter literate, its only my thoughts. lost almost evey pic in photobucket for the last couple weeks, got them back using firefox instead of aol, aol seems to pop my pics up today though

heres one of the funny things with some of these new ones, its a fake virus that gets you thinking its a virus and leads you into deleting files your own anti software thinks is infected, then after you delete enough, you opened the door to all sorts of things

    Hi RRP,

I don't know, I assume it is a valid attack as Norton's jumped on it as a recognized problem. So far Norton's has saved me a lot of trouble over the years and I tend not to question it.

That may be good advise, I know IE (Microsoft) has it's weaknesess and that Microsoft is trying to fix them. That's one of the reasons hackers like and target IE.

Oh I understand and I also trust Norton on my desktop - I just wondered out loud since my complaint about Photobucket are all those pesky ads they throw at you.

I'm beginning to think it may be time to run Firefox as my default browser and see how that goes.

    You wont look back..

I just ran Malwarebytes, and super anti-spyware, and niether even had 1 hit..

IE is notoriously crappy.. It has had problems for YEARS, yet it never gets better.

That's pretty weird fishlessman, but then I have never run AOL. I think Firefox may be worth a try. I have it installed but usually only use it for pages that do not display correctly in IE.

That's a scary thought, isn't it. Next thing I know someone is going to tell me that the monster under my bed is real, there is a boogy man and trolls do live under the bridge on the way to the Big Green Egg Forum! Will it ever end? ;)

I hear ya and agree, I would hope that they screen those ads till they are blue in the face and then do it again. I got the impression the Photobucket was aware of the problem (attacks not ads, LOL) and are working on it, we can only hope.

    Hey azbbguy

I have run IE for ever and a day and have had very few problems with it. I sometimes get a page that will not display right but they are not common. Now I will have to train Foxfire to think like it's IE. LOL. I have been using Thunderbird for my email for quit a while and it is OK. I think my only complaint with it is it has the worst spell checker I have ever seen anywhere.
