got my work computer back yesterday
turned out it was a very nasty Spyware
I picked up when accessed PhotoBucket
the IT guy thought maybe one of the ads had it and when my mouse ran over it, ZAP!
now, gotta get that free version of spyware prevention program on "old faithful" at home 'cause don't think my Norton version has it

If I contracted some sort of "disease" because I was visiting PB on my work PC, our security folks would, in all probability, escort me to the door and I would join the ranks of the unemployed quicker than I could blink. They have no sense of humor when it comes to that sort of thing.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

avast got that virus from photobucket out of my system, but it had to be run from a separate harddrive, downloading the protection onto my infected puter was useless as the virus was able to infect the download while it was downloading. which program did they set you up with, i have a feeling a few more puters here may have it though it hasnt become fully active on them yet.

    Dump "norton"..

Get a better AV.. I personally run ESET

Also download "super anti spyware" and "malwarebytes", ot other GOOD spyware/malware tools..
  • thanks; they loaded malwarebytes on my work puter! Now for home computer ;)

    Get super anti-spyware as well..

    I always run both.

That coupled with ESET, has treated me well, for a long time..
  • Kari,

Malwarebytes is not an antivirus program.

You need an antivirus program running on your machine. AVAST is free and free updates, a great program.

spamware/scareware and other malware programs as well as intrusive cookies are caught by malware detection programs.

Do not run 2 antivirus programs on a system.

    Antivirus use AVAST

For Malware have and use these
    . Malwarebytes
    . Search & Destroy
    . Ad-Aware

The more stuff you have on the drives the longer each program takes to run.

If there is a tough problem then one of the best find and destroy programs is an online Virus detection from MicroTrend called HouseCall and it too is free.

I have Photobucket open continually, never logging out and haven't had any problems.

3 weeks to a month ago something popped up and it was scareware which is easy to detect and tricky to not get caught up in.

The pop up is a graphic having the look of a 'window'. If one runs their mouse over the graphic 'window' it will not change appearance when mousing over the red X 'close button'. So if not thinking one clicks the red X they actually activate the scareware/malware/virus. At that point it is too late and the problem is now on the computer.

The problem I saw, mentioned above, could not be closed. Nor could I go down to the Taskbar and get it to close by clicking close. I don't exactly remember how I got out of it. I either used the Taskmanager to end the program or I pressed reset and restarted. I think it was the taskmanager, however, I didn't end up having any problems.

  • I ran NOD32 for years but have converted to Microsoft's free Security Essentials program.

If I have to remove 'bad stuff' from a client's computer, MBAM is one of my favorite tools.
