here it is on the plank. ..plank had soaked in sink for 4 hours (i put a pot on top of it to make sure it was submerged. . .the fire was well established at 425 dome temp (i used maple leaf lump this time, last time it was royal oak). . .took the plank right from the sink and put it on the grid in normal direct position. .. waited about 10 minutes, then put the salmon on the plank (brushed with olive oil and dizzy raging river). . .about 10 minutes into the cook i squirted half a lemon over them. . .pulled after about 25 total minutes (probably could have pulled them after 20. . .results are below. . .they were delicious again. ..

    mad max beyond eggdome,
Hey - I had to buy the Dizzy Pig seasonings after seeing your previous picture. I just received the rubs yesterday. I'm off to buy the salmon for tonight. I'm going to try one with the Raging River and the other with the Tsunami Spin. Wish me luck. Your results are just superb!!!

  • Julie,
good stuff. .btw, the piece on the left of the plank is one with tsunami spin (my daughter's favorite), the rest have raging river. ...[p]are you going to give the plank a try again?. . .if not, the other way we really like it is to take about 4 large lemons, slice them up and lay the slices directly on your grid, then lay the salmon on top of the lemon slices. .keeps the salmon from sticking to the grid and adds great moisture/flavor to the fish. .[p]good luck[p]max

  • Can you tell me where you purchased the cedar plank? Is it made of regular cedar wood that I can purchase at Lowes or Home Depot?
  • Randy Deshotel,
i got mine at williams sonoma (4 planks for about $16.00). ..probably on the pricey side, but i was there and so were they. . .i've heard people say that they buy plain (untreated) cedar shingles and use them, so yes, i guess you could buy them at lowes or HD... . i have also seen them at all kinds of kitchen stores, crate and barrel, etc. .

Julie,[p]Where in Sioux City do you get good salmon?[p]Chuck
  • mad max beyond eggdome,
Tried the salmon on lemon slices this weekend and don't see how it could get any better. Used a Dijon-Bourbon glaze recipe I found on here somewhere (with the lemon zest added to the glaze) and it was wonderful. If the cedar plank is better, then guess I had better be on the lookout for cedar.

    mad max beyond eggdome,
I made the salmon tonight. It was a hit with everyone! I followed your instructions exactly but decreased the cook time to 17 minutes and it turned out perfect this time. So moist and cooked where the center was ever so slightly pink. My mistake last time was allowing the temp to get to 500 degrees for a few minutes. Made the salmon too smoky and the cedar taste a bit bitter. Nature Boy if you are reading this - your rubs are so good. Tried both the Raging river rub and Tsunami Spin. My favorite is Tsunami Spin - just a bit of kick to it. I bought my Cedar board on Ebay - 3 large boards 3/4 in thick for $9. I think I can get 3 cooks out of each one.

    Randy Deshotel,
I bought mine on EBAY. 3 Large planks for $9. 3/4 inch thick. Whatever you buy - make sure they are untreated. Don't want any chemicals in your food. The planks I bought were also kiln dried and sanded very smooth on one side so the salmon was easy to remove. Make sure the salmon and or board is brushed with olive oil before grilling.

  • Julie,
glad it turned out so good for you this time. . .17 - 20 minutes sounds about right. . .like i said, i let them go a little long last time, and while still very moist, a little more done than we like. ..i'm really glad it all worked out this time. . .looks like the cedar trees had better watch out :)

  • espnga,
glad you liked the lemon slices, that is an eggsellent way to do fish. . .but i gotta tell ya, trying the cedar plank thing is believing. ..
